- VAG1598/22 test box
- Multimeter (Fluke 83 or equivalent)
- VW1594 adapter set
- Wiring diagram
Test requirements
- Fuses 5, 10 and 29 OK
- Battery (B+) voltage at least 11.5 V
Test sequence
- Connect V.A.G1551 (VAG1552) Scan Tool (ST). Refer to "Scan Tool Testing/VAG1551/Functional Check" under "Powertrain Management/Computers and Control Systems/Testing and Inspection" Testing and Inspection
- Turn on ignition and press buttons -0- and -1- to insert "Engine Electronics" address word 01.

If 255 is displayed in display field 4:
- Activate cruise control system Cruise Control System, Activating and Deactivating
Vehicles with automatic transmission only:
- Perform test drive and exceed speed of 30 km/h (approx. 19 mph) once. Then turn off engine and leave selector lever in position 2, 3 or D.
Observe the safety measures during a test drive. Refer under "Powertrain Management/Fuel Delivery and Air Induction/Service Precautions", Technician Safety Information
- Engage parking brake.
NOTE: On vehicles with an automatic transmission, the CCS switch will not be supplied with voltage until the vehicle speed exceeds 30 km/h and the selector lever is in position 2, 3 or D. Once the switch has been supplied with voltage it will also remain live at idle speed provided a driving range (except 1 or R) is selected.
- Check specified value for switch position from CCS operating switch in display field 4.
Check requirements Display fields
Switch -B- in detent at "OFF" 0011
Switch -B- at "ON" 0000
Switch -B- at "RES" 1000
Switch A pressed 0100
If the specified values are not obtained:
- Press -> button.
- Press buttons -0- and -6- to select "End Output" function 06 and press -Q- button to confirm input.
- Turn off ignition.
- Remove wiper arms and plenum chamber cover.
- Connect VAG1598/22 test box to control module wiring harness.
- Check wiring from Engine Control Module (ECM) to CCS operating switch for open/short circuits.
- Check DTC memory. If necessary, repair any malfunctions and erase DTC memory. Refer to "Displaying and Reading Trouble Codes/With Manufacturer Scan Tool/Check DTC Memory (Function 02)" under "Powertrain Management/Computers and Control Systems" Testing and Inspection
- Display readiness code. Refer to "Monitors, Trips and/or Drive Cycle/Displaying Readiness Code" under "Powertrain Management/Computers and Control Systems" Testing and Inspection
If DTC memory has been erased or the Engine Control Module (ECM) was disconnected from permanent battery (B+) voltage, generate the readiness code again. Refer to "Monitors, Trips and/or Drive Cycle/Generating Readiness Code" under "Powertrain Management/Computers and Control Systems" Testing and Inspection
