A/T Controls - MIL ON/DTC 00281 in TCM Memory
ConditionCustomer States MIL ON, DTC 00281 Stored in TCM DTC Memory
The Malfunction Indicator Light is illuminated and DTC 00281 is stored in Transmission Control Module (TCM) DTC memory. No obvious fault has been found with Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) -G68-.
Tip: The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) -G68- will not effect the vehicle speedometer or cruise control operations.
Tip: If DTC 00297 is stored in TCM memory, also install -G38- overlay harness as outlined in Technical Bulletin instance 2002416 (Customer States MIL ON, DTC 00297 Stored in TCM DTC Memory).

Service
Install -G68- overlay harness Part No: 1J0971661C as follows:
Engine compartment harness covers, removing
- Obtain radio code and preset radio stations.
- Disconnect battery ground (GND) strap.
- Remove air cleaner housing (see Repair Manual Group 24).
- Remove battery and battery tray (see Repair Manual Group 27).
- Remove engine wiring harness covers.
Vehicle Speed Sensor -G68-, replacing and removing existing connector
- Locate Vehicle Speed Sensor -G68- and replace.
- Cut connector and wires from main harness (near taped section of harness).
Plenum cover, removing
Tip: Before removing the wiper arms check that the wiper motor is in park position. Only then can the wiper arm end position be correctly set when installing.
- Pry off black cover caps -arrows- using screwdriver.
- Loosen M8 hex nuts securing wiper arms, but do not remove completely.
- Move wiper arms gently until they release.
- Remove hex nut completely and remove wiper arms.
Cowl panel, removing
Tip: The cowl panel is clipped into a guide rail below the windshield.
- Pull out rubber seal -1- and unscrew bolts -2-.
- Remove pollen filter cover.
- Unclip trim on inner fender (arrows) on both sides.
- Carefully pull cowl panel out upward.
Overlay harness, installing
- Connect overlay harness to Vehicle Speed Sensor -G68-.
- Route overlay harness along existing harness to plenum opening as shown -arrow- (illustration shows -G38- harness installed). White dotted line indicates general routing.
- Route overlay harness in plenum along existing harness to Transmission Control Module (TCM) connector -arrow-. White dotted line indicates general routing.
- Disconnect multi-pin connector from TCM.
- Cut tie wrap at end of connector and remove cover from connector by depressing tab with small screwdriver while pushing cover in direction of -arrow-.
- Obtain appropriate pin removal tool from VAS 1978 wire harness repair kit.
- Locate cavity 65 of TCM connector (yellow wire) and remove terminal.
- Insert the yellow wire of overlay harness into cavity 65.
- Locate cavity 20 of TCM connector (white wire) and remove terminal.
- Insert the white wire of overlay harness into cavity 20.
- Locate cavity 43 of TCM connector (black wire) and remove terminal.
- Insert the black wire of overlay harness into cavity 43.
- Cut 3 wires (previously removed) as close as possible to the taped section of harness.
- Install cover using new tie wrap.
- Install multi-pin connector to TCM.
- Tie wrap overlay harness to existing harness in plenum and engine compartment as necessary to ensure routing and prevent rattles.
Cowl panel, installing
Installation is in reverse order of removal.
Tip: The sides of the cowl panel must be inserted under the rubber strip of the cowl panel strip on the -A- pillar (arrow).
- Install engine wiring harness covers.
- Install battery and battery tray (see Repair Manual Group 27) DO NOT connect battery ground (GND) at this time.
- Install air cleaner housing (see Repair Manual Group 24).
WARNING:
Ensure that there is no person inside the vehicle when connecting battery ground strap.
- Connect battery ground (GND) strap.
- Connect VAG 1551, VAS 5051, or VAS 5052 Scan Tool. - Check all systems for stored DTC's.
- Erase any stored DTC's.
- After connecting battery, check vehicle equipment (radio code, clock, electric windows) as per Repair Manual and/or Owner's Manual.
- Program radio station presets.
