ECM Identification, Connecting VAG 1551/1552 Scan Tool




Address word 01: "engine electronics"







Special tools, workshop equipment, testers, measuring instruments and auxiliary items required:
- VAG 1551 Scan Tool


NOTE: The VAG 1552 Scan Tool can he used instead of the VAG 1551; however the VAG 1552 is not equipped with a printer!







- VAG 1551/3 Connecting Cable

Test conditions:
- Battery voltage OK
- Fuse 12 OK
- Engine and transmission Ground connections OK







Work sequence:
- Connect VAG 1551/1552 using VAG 1551/3 adaptor cable.

Display will appear as shown


VAG On Board Diagnostic HELP
1 - Rapid data transfer*
2 - Blink code output*

NOTE: If the display remains blank, See Scan Tool operating instructions.


After Scan Tool has been connected:
- Depending upon desired function:
Switch ON ignition
or
Start engine. Refer to "Diagnosis With Address Word 01, Selectable Functions" at "Diagnosis With Scan Tool, Address Word 01".

- Operate Scan Tool taking displayed information into account
- Press button 1 to select "Rapid data transfer".
- Press 0 and 1 buttons to select Address word 01:
"Engine electronics".
- Press Q button to enter input.

ECM identification will appear on display as shown (example only)

Coding 0001 WSC XXXXX



- 038906018M = ECM part number (always check with the parts department for the latest part number)
- 1.9 ltr. = Engine displacement
- R4 = Type of engine (4 Cyl. in-line engine)
- EDC = Injection system (Electronic Diesel Control)
- G = Vehicles with Cruise Control (NO display = NO Cruise Control)
- AG = Automatic transmission
SG = Manual transmission
- Coding 00001 = coding variant
- 1813 = ECM software version
- WSC Dealer number (Work Shop Code)
- Press -> button.
