Shift Linkage: Testing and Inspection

Required special tools and equipment:





^ Torque wrench V.A.G 1331 (or equivalent)
^ Feeler gauges

WARNING!
Before working on the car with the engine running, move selector lever to position -P- and apply parking brake.

Shift Selector Lever To "P" And Switch Ignition On
^ Brake pedal not depressed:
Selector lever is locked and cannot be shifted out of "P" Shift lock solenoid blocks selector lever.
^ Brake pedal depressed:
Shift lock solenoid releases selector lever. It is possible to shift into a driving range.

Shift Selector Lever To "N" And Switch Ignition On
^ Brake pedal not depressed:
Selector lever is locked and cannot be shifted out of "N". Shift lock solenoid blocks selector lever.
^ Brake pedal depressed:
Shift lock solenoid releases selector lever. It is possible to shift into a driving range.

Note:
^ The starter must not operate in the selector lever positions "1", "2", "3", "D" and "R"
^ When travelling at speeds above 5 km/h (3 m/h) and shifting to "N," the shift lock solenoid must not engage and block the selector /ever Selector lever can be shifted into a driving range.
^ When travelling at speeds below 5 km/h (3 m/h)(almost stopped) and shifting to "N," the shift lock solenoid must not engage until after approx. 1 sec. Selector lever cannot be shifted out of "N" until the brake pedal is depressed.
