Customer States MIL ON, DTC 00297 Gearbox Speed Sender -G38- Stored in TCM DTC Memory
The Malfunction Indicator Light is illuminated and DTC 00297 Gearbox Speed Sender -G38- is stored in Transmission Control Module (TCM) DTC memory. No obvious fault has been found with Gearbox Speed Sender -G38-.
Tip: The Gearbox Speed Sender -G38- will not effect the vehicle speedometer or cruise control operations.
Tip: If DTC 00281 Road Speed Sender -G68- is stored in TCM memory, also install -G68- overlay harness as outlined in Technical Bulletin instance 2002393 (Customer States MIL ON, DTC 00281 Road Speed Sender -G68- Stored in TCM DTC Memory).

Install -G38- overlay harness Part No: 1C0971661 as follows:
Engine compartment harness covers, removing
- Obtain radio code and preset radio stations.
- Disconnect battery ground (GND) strap.
- Remove battery and battery tray (see Repair Manual Group 27).
- Remove air cleaner housing (see Repair Manual Group 24).
- Remove engine wiring harness covers.
Gearbox Speed Sender -G38-, replacing and removing existing connector
- Locate Gearbox Speed Sender -G38- and replace.
- Cut connector and wires from main harness (near taped section of harness).
Plenum covers, removing
Remove inner plenum panel covers as follows:
- Pull center cover -1- forward out of latch and remove from instrument panel (arrow).
- Remove screws -1-.
- Lift left plenum panel cover -1- and remove from clips at front and rear edge.
- Pull cover -1- toward center of vehicle and out of retainer in A-pillar to remove.
- Lift right plenum panel cover -2- and remove from clips at front and rear edge.
- Pull cover -2- toward center of vehicle and out of retainer in A-pillar to remove.
- Remove mounting bolts from left closeout panel -3- and right closeout panel -4- and pull panels upward out of plenum to remove.
- Remove both A-pillar trim pieces.
- Remove screws -6- to allow removal of center defroster duct -5- and end pieces -7-.
- Remove boot from defroster duct to center air distribution duct -arrow-.
- Remove center defroster duct.
The TCM is located in the plenum chamber center right.
- Inspect TCM ground (GND) connection (must not be loose or corroded and terminal must be crimped on wire correctly).
Overlay harness, installing
- Connect overlay harness to Gearbox Speed Sender -G38-.
- Route overlay harness along existing harness to plenum opening. White dotted line shows general routing.
- Lightly pull on harness -arrow- at plenum to loosen harness plenum grommet.
- Route overlay harness along side of grommet into plenum area, then push grommet back into place.
- Route overlay harness in plenum along existing harness to Transmission Control Module (TCM) connector.
- Disconnect multi-pin connector from TCM.
- Cut tie wrap at end of connector and remove cover from connector by depressing tab with small screwdriver while pushing cover in direction of -arrow-.
- Obtain appropriate pin removal tool from VAS 1978 wire harness repair kit.
- Locate cavity 66 of TCM connector (red wire) and remove terminal.
- Insert the red wire of overlay harness into cavity 66.
- Locate cavity 21 of TCM connector (green wire) and remove terminal.
- Insert the green wire of overlay harness into cavity 21.
- Locate cavity 44 of TCM connector (black wire) and remove terminal.
- Insert the black wire of overlay harness into cavity 44.
- Cut 3 wires (previously removed) as close as possible to the taped section of harness.
- Install cover using new tie wrap.
- Install multi-pin connector to TCM.
- Tie wrap overlay harness to existing harness in plenum and engine compartment as necessary to ensure routing and prevent rattles.
- Install defroster duct, boot and all plenum covers in reverse order of removal.
- Install engine wiring harness covers.
- Install air cleaner housing (see Repair Manual Group 24).
- Install battery and battery tray (see Repair Manual Group 27).
WARNING:
Ensure that there is no person inside the vehicle when connecting battery ground strap.
- Connect battery ground (GND) strap.
- Connect VAS 5051/5052 Scan Tool.
- Check all systems for stored DTC's.
- Erase any stored DTC's.
- After connecting battery, check vehicle equipment (radio code, clock, electric windows) as per Repair Manual and/or Owner's Manual.
- Program radio station presets.
