Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM), (Function 03)




Output Diagnostic Test Mode (scan tool function 03)

The following components are actuated in sequence:
1. Cylinder 1 fuel injector -N30-
2. Cylinder 2 fuel injector -N31-
3. Cylinder 3 fuel injector -N32-
4. Cylinder 4 fuel injector -N33-
5. Cylinder 5 fuel injector -N83-
6. Cylinder 6 fuel injector -N84-
7. EVAP canister purge regulator valve - N80-
8. Secondary Air Injection (AIR) solenoid valve -N112-
9. Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay -J299-
10. Intake Manifold Tuning Valve (IMT) - N156- (change-over valve)
11. Valves -1- and -2- for camshaft adjustment, -N205- and -N208-

Special tools and equipment
- VAG1551 or VAG1552 Scan Tool (ST) with VAG1551/3 adapter cable
- VAG1598/22 test box
- Multimeter US1119 (Fluke 83 or equivalent)
- VAG1527B voltage tester
- VW1594 connector test kit
- Wiring diagram

Test conditions





- Fuses 28, 29, 30, 32 and 34 OK


Note:
The output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) can be activated only with the ignition switched on and the engine not running.
The output DTM is interrupted if the engine is started, or if a rotary pulse from the ignition system is recognized.
When operating in the output DTM, the individual output signals are actuated until the program sequence is advanced by pressing the -> button.
Output signals are checked by listening for the sound of the component being actuated, or feeling for mechanical evidence of actuation, such as clicking, vibration, etc.
Without letting the engine run, briefly switch the ignition off for approx. 2 seconds before repeating the output checks.
During the entire output DTM sequence, the electric fuel pump will run.
The output DTM will be interrupted after 10 minutes.

Test sequence
- Connect VAG1551/VAG1552 scan tool and insert "Engine Electronics" address word 01 (ignition on), [1][2][3][4]Connecting VAG 1551 Scan Tool

Fuel injectors -N30-, -N31-, -N32-, -N33-, -N83-, -N84-:
- Press -Q- button to confirm input.

Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Cylinder Fuel injector-N30


NOTE: The fuel pump relay must be activated, the fuel pump must run, and you must clearly hear the flow of fuel in the fuel pressure regulator. If the fuel pump does not run, check the fuel pump relay and connections.

- Operate throttle valve at throttle body. As soon as Closed Throttle Position (CTP) switch opens, cylinder / fuel injector is actuated (clicks) 5 times.

To check remaining fuel injectors:
- Press -> button and open throttle valve again.

As soon as Closed Throttle Position (CTP) switch opens, applicable fuel injector is actuated (clicks) 5 times.

- Repeat for each fuel injector.

To skip individual tests:
- Press -> button to advance through program sequence.

If one or more of the fuel injectors is not actuated:
- Check fuel injectors, Refer to "Fuel Delivery and Air Induction/Fuel Injectors, Checking" Under "Powertrain Management" Testing and Inspection

EVAP canister purge regulator valve -N80-:
- Press -> button.

EVAP Canister Purge Regulator Valve-N80


The valve (on air cleaner) will click until the -> button is pressed to advance the program sequence.

If the valve clicks but a malfunction is still suspected (valve does not open or close):
- Remove hose from EVAP canister purge regulator valve.
- Connect spare section of hose to port on valve from where hose was removed.
- Blow through hose during output DTM of EVAP canister purge regulator valve.

Valve must open and close.

If the valve is not actuated (does not click):
- Continuation of check when EVAP canister purge regulator valve -N80- does not click.

Secondary Air Injection (AIR) solenoid valve -N112-:
- Press -> button.

Secondary Air Inject.Solenoid valve - N112


The valve will click until the button is -> pressed to advance the program sequence.

If the valve is not actuated (does not click):
- Continuation of check when secondary Air Injection (AIR) solenoid valve -N112- does not click.

Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay - J299-:
- Press -> button.

Secondary Air Injection Pump Relay - J299


The relay will be actuated and turn on the secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump motor until the -> button is pressed to advance the program sequence.

If the secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump motor - V101- does not run at intervals:
- Continuation of check when secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump motor -V101- does not run at intervals.

Intake Manifold Tuning Valve (IMT) -N156- (change-over valve):
- Press -> button.

The valve will click until the -> button is pressed to advance the program sequence.

NOTE: Checking intake manifold tuning valve function, Testing and Inspection

If the valve is not actuated (does not click):
- Continuation of check when Intake Manifold Tuning (IMT) valve -N156- (change-over valve) does not click.

Valves -1- and -2- for camshaft adjustment, - N205-, -N208-:
- Press -> button.

Indicated on display

Camshaft Adjustment 1


Valves -1- and -2- for camshaft adjustment, - N205- and -N208-, are actuated (click) until the -> button is pressed to advance the program sequence.

If one or both valves are not actuated (do not click):
- Continuation of check when valve -1- or -2- for camshaft adjustment, -N205-, -N208- does not click.
- Press -> button.

- Press buttons -0- and -6- to select "End Output" function 06, and press -Q- button to confirm input.
- Switch ignition off.

NOTE: If the ignition is not switched off before attempting to start, the engine will not start as the injectors and the ignition coils will not be actuated.

Continuation of check when EVAP canister purge regulator valve -N80- does not click:





- Disconnect harness connector -1- from EVAP canister purge regulator valve -2- and connect VAG1527B voltage tester to harness connector using test leads from VW1594 connector test kit.

Voltage tester must flash.

Voltage tester flashes:
- Proceed with output DTM until completion.
- Switch ignition off.
- Replace EVAP canister purge regulator valve -N80-.

Voltage tester does not flash:
- Proceed with output DTM until completion.
- Switch ignition off.






- Connect VAG1598/22 test box to ECM wiring harness.
- Connect multimeter US1119 (Fluke 83 or equivalent) between test box socket 15 and terminal 2 of 2-pin harness connector for EVAP canister purge regulator valve - N80- using VW1594 connector test kit.

- Measure resistance.
Specified value: 1.5 Ohms max.

- Check wire for short to B+ and short to Ground (Gnd).
Specified value: Infinity Ohms

- Using wiring diagram check wire between pin 1 of 2-pin connector and fuel pump relay -J17- for open circuit.
Specified value: 1.5 Ohms max.

If wiring is OK:
- Replace Motronic ECM.

Continuation of check when secondary Air Injection (AIR) solenoid valve -N112- does not click:






- Disconnect harness connector -1- from secondary Air Injection (AIR) solenoid valve -2- and connect VAG1527B voltage tester to harness connector using test leads from VW1594 connector test kit.
Voltage tester must flash.

Voltage tester flashes:
- Proceed with output DTM until completion.
- Switch ignition off.
- Replace secondary Air Injection (AIR) solenoid valve -N112-.

Voltage tester does not flash:
- Proceed with output DTM until completion.
- Switch ignition off.






- Connect VAG1598/22 test box to ECM wiring harness.
- Connect multimeter US1119 (Fluke 83 or equivalent) between test box socket 33 and terminal 2 of 2-pin harness connector for secondary Air Injection (AIR) solenoid valve -N112- using VW1594 connector test kit.

- Measure resistance.
Specified value: 1.5 Ohms max.

- Check wire for short to B+ and short to Ground (Gnd).
Specified value: Infinity Ohms

- Using wiring diagram, check wire between terminal 1 of 2-pin harness connector and relay socket for secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay -J299- for open circuit.
Specified value: 1.5 Ohms max.

If wiring is OK:
- Replace Motronic ECM.

Continuation of check when secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump motor -V101- does not run at intervals:
- Remove front noise insulation panel.






- Disconnect harness connector -1- from secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump motor -2- and connect VAG1527B voltage tester to harness connector using test leads from VW1594 connector test kit.
Voltage tester must flash.

Voltage tester flashes:
- Proceed with output DTM until completion.
- Switch ignition off.
- Replace secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump motor -V101-.

Voltage tester does not flash:
- Proceed with output DTM until completion.
- Switch ignition off.
- Remove stowage compartment on drivers side.






- Check fuse for secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay -J299- (arrow).

If fuse is OK:






- Remove secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay (arrow) from relay panel in control module protective housing.

NOTE: If tools are necessary to remove relays or control modules from the relay panel, first disconnect the battery Ground strap.

CAUTION! Before disconnecting the battery, determine the correct coding for the anti-theft radio.

- Check voltage supply (terminal 30) for secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay - J299- using wiring diagram. If necessary replace relay.

If the voltage tester does not flash and the secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay does not click:
- Proceed with output DTM until completion.
- Switch ignition off.






- Connect VAG1598/22 test box to ECM harness connector.






- Using wiring diagram, check wire between test box socket 30 and terminal 6 in relay socket for secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay -J299- for open circuit.
Specified value: 1.5 Ohms max.

If wiring is OK:
- Replace Motronic ECM.

Continuation of check when Intake Manifold Tuning (IMT) valve -N156- (change-over valve) does not click:






- Disconnect harness connector -1- from intake manifold tuning valve -2- and connect VAG1527B voltage tester to harness connector using test leads from VW1594 connector test kit.

Voltage tester must flash.

Voltage tester flashes:
- Proceed with output DTM until completion.
- Switch ignition off.
- Replace Intake Manifold Tuning Valve (IMT) -N156-.

Voltage tester does not flash:
- Proceed with output DTM until completion.
- Switch ignition off.






- Connect VAG1598/22 test box to ECM harness connector.
- Connect multimeter US1119 (Fluke 83 or equivalent) between test box socket 64 and terminal 2 of 2-pin harness connector for Intake Manifold Tuning Valve (IMT) -N156- using VW1594 connector test kit.

- Measure resistance.
Specified value: 1.5 Ohms max.

- Check wire for short to B+ and short to Ground (Gnd).
Specified value: Infinity Ohms

- Using wiring diagram, check wire between terminal 1 of 2-pin harness connector and relay panel for open circuit.
Specified value: 1.5 Ohms max.

If wiring is OK:
- Replace Motronic ECM.

Continuation of check when valve -1- or -2- for camshaft adjustment, -N205-, -N208- does not click:






- Disconnect harness connector -1- from valve 1 or 2 for camshaft adjustment -2- (which ever one does not click) and connect VAG1527B voltage tester to harness connector using test leads from VW1594 connector test kit.
Voltage tester must flash.

Voltage tester flashes:
- Proceed with output DTM until completion.
- Switch ignition off.
- Replace valve -1- or -2- for camshaft adjustment -N205- or -N208-.

Voltage tester does not flash:
- Proceed with output DTM until completion.
- Switch ignition off.
- Disconnect harness connector from working (clicking) valve for camshaft adjustment.






- Connect VAG1598/22 test box to ECM harness connector.
- Connect multimeter US1119 (Fluke 83 or equivalent) between test box socket 55 and terminal 2 of 2-pin harness connector for valve for camshaft adjustment using VW1594 connector test kit.

- Measure resistance.
Specified value: 1.5 Ohms max.

- Check wire for short to B+ and short to Ground (Gnd).
Specified value: 1.5 Infinity Ohms

- Using wiring diagram, check wire between terminal 1 of 2-pin harness connector and relay panel for open circuit.
Specified value: 1.5 Ohms max.

If wiring is OK:
- Replace Motronic ECM.
