Engine Control Module (ECM), removing and installing
The engine control module regulates the fuel injection, throttle valve control module, oxygen sensor control, ignition, knock control, EVAP valve, engine speed limitation via injectors or fuel pump relay, camshaft adjustment and On Board Diagnostic (OBD).
Special tools and equipment
VAG1551 or VAG1552 Scan Tool (ST) with VAG1551/3 adapter cable
Work sequence
If the ECM has to be replaced, carry out the following steps in the sequence listed.
- Connect VAG1551/VAG1552 Scan Tool (ST) and press buttons -0- and -1- to insert "Engine Electronics" address word 01 (with ignition switched on).

- Print out control module identification by pressing PRINT button on scan tool.
- Press -> button.
- Press buttons -0- and -6- to select "End Output" function 06, and press -Q- button to confirm input.
- Switch ignition off.
- Remove cover of protective housing for control modules.
- Using screwdriver, carefully lift up mounting bracket (arrow).
- Disconnect harness connector clips and remove ECM harness connectors.
- Remove old control module and insert new one.
- Check ECM coding, Engine Control Module, Coding
- Carry out adaptation of throttle valve control module -J388- to ECM.
- Check DTC memory of new ECM and erase DTC memory if necessary.
- Adapt new control module module to immobilizer.
- Generate readiness code. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes
