Seal for left-hand drive flange, replacing

Removing left-hand drive flange
- Loosen drive axle/wheel hub bolt and wheel bolts with vehicle standing on its wheels.
- Remove wheel.
- Remove heat shield for left-hand drive axle from wheel housing.
- Remove drive axle.
- Place container under transmission.





- Remove filler plug (arrow) and draw off at least 0.5 liter of gear oil from front final drive using VAG1358A oil extraction unit.

Note: Oil must be drawn out of the front final drive, otherwise there is a risk of gear oil mixing with the ATF.

- Remove left-hand drive axle protective plate (if installed).
- Remove speedometer Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) -G22-.
- Detach bracket for connector from drive flange bearing bracket.





- Unbolt drive flange bearing bracket (arrows).
- Pull out drive flange.

Removing seal





- Remove circlip (arrow -A-) for grooved ball bearing.





- Press drive flange out of drive flange bearing bracket.
- Pull out drive flange seal using VW681 extractor lever.

Removing grooved ball bearing





- Press grooved ball bearing out of bearing bracket.

Installing grooved ball bearing





- Press new grooved ball bearing into bearing bracket.

Installing seal





- Drive new seal in until press piece makes contact; take care to keep seal straight.





- Install impulse wheel for speedometer Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) -G22- onto drive flange (arrow).
Installation position: lugs on impulse wheel must engage in slots on drive flange.





- Press bearing bracket with grooved ball bearing onto drive





- Install circlip (arrow-A-).

Installing left-hand drive flange





- Replace O-ring (arrow -B-) in drive flange bearing bracket.





- Make sure there are no sharp edges on transmission end of drive flange (arrow); smooth edges if necessary.
- Install drive axle.
- Install wheel.
- With transmission installed, check gear oil level in front final drive. Differential Fluid - A/T





Tightening torques
Drive flange to transmission 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.)
Drive axle to transmission M10 bolt 80 Nm (59 ft. lbs.)
Drive axle to wheel hub:
M14 bolt 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs.) + 1/2-turn (180°)
^ Always replace
M16 bolt 190 Nm (140 ft. lbs.) + 1/2-turn (180°)
^ Always replace
Wheel bolts to wheel hub 120 Nm (89 ft. lbs.)
Protective plate above left-hand drive axle to transmission 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.)
