Engine operating conditions, checking

NOTE: This test checks whether the engine control unit recognizes the engine operating modes idle, pad throttle, full throttle, enrichment, and deceleration.

Special tools and equipment
VAG1551 or VAG1552 scan tool with VAG1551/3 adapter

Checking requirements
- Engine coolant temperature at least 85°C (185°F) See VAG1551 scan tool function 08, display group 004, display field 3
- Accelerator pedal cable adjustment OK

Checking
- Connect VAG1551 or VAG1552 scan tool and press buttons -0- and -1- to insert "Engine Electronics" address word 01 (with engine running at idle).

- Press buttons -0- and -8- to select "Read Measuring Value Block" function 08, and press -Q- button to confirm input.

- Check engine operating conditions (display field 4):

Idle:
As long as the engine is running at idle speed "Idle" must be displayed.
GDisplay: Idle

Decel:
- Increase engine speed to above 3000 RPM.
- Close throttle abruptly.

As long as the engine speed is above 1400 RPM "Decel" must be displayed.
Display: Decel

NOTE: Below 1400 RPM "Idle" will be recognized.

Part throttle:
- Increase engine RPM evenly.

As long as the engine RPMs are increased evenly, "Part throt" must be displayed.
- Display: Part throt

Enrichment:
- Quickly increase engine speed.

"Enrich" must be displayed briefly.

- Display: Enrich

Full throttle:
- Floor accelerator pedal (onto throttle valve stop).

"Full throt" must be displayed briefly.

- Display: Full throt

NOTE: A test drive may have to be performed to show "Full throt" in the display.

WARNING!
When driving or riding in an airbag-equipped vehicle, NEVER hold the scan tool or other test equipment in your hands or lap while in motion. Objects between you and the airbag increase the risk of injury in an accident.
During a test drive in an airbag-equipped vehicle, test equipment must always be fastened to and operated from the rear seat by a second technician.

- Press -> button.
- Press buttons -0- and -6- to select "End Output" function 06, and press -Q- button to confirm input.

If the specifications are not attained:
- Check DTC memory, if necessary, repair any malfunctions and then erase DTC memory.
- Check accelerator mechanism for ease of operation.
- Check Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) -G69-. Throttle Position (TP) Sensor, Checking
- Check readiness code. If Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory has been erased, or ECM was disconnected, generate new readiness code. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes
