Drive Flange Oil Seals, Removing And Installing

Transmission installed
Observe general repair instructions. Service and Repair

Special tools, testers and material
^ Oil seal extractor lever VW 681 4
^ Drift VW 195
^ Drift VW 295
^ Multi-purpose grease

Removing
- Turn steering to left onto full lock stop.





- Remove cover plate over the right-hand drive axle (arrows 1 and 2).
- Remove cover above left-hand drive axle.
- Place oil drip tray under transmission.
- Disconnect axle from drive flange.
- Carefully tie-up drive axle as high as possible (do not damage paint on shaft).





- Place a chisel or spacer -A- behind drive flange.
- Pull drive flange shaft out of differential gears by turning bolt -B-.

Note: If the dove flange shaft does not come out square, insert a second bolt on opposite side of the flange to assist in removal.





Note: Always replace the drive flange shaft circlip Clamp the shaft in a vise, using protective jaw covers, and press the old circlip out of the groove by using a new circle -A-.

- Pull out flange shaft oil seal with NEW 681.

Installing





- Drive in new right-hand flange shaft oil seal to 5.5 mm (0.217 inch) below surface of transmission housing.
- Pack space between sealing lip and dust lip with multi-purpose grease.





- Drive in new left-hand flange shaft oil seal to 5.5 mm (0.217 inch) below transmission housing outer surface.
- Drive flange shaft in with drift VW 295.
- Bolt drive axle to flange shaft.
- Reinstall drive axle cover plates.

Tightening torques
Drive axle to flanged shaft M8: 45 Nm (33 ft. lbs.)
Drive axle to flanged shaft M10: 80 Nm (59 ft. lbs.)
Cover plates above drive axles to transmission: 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.)
