01V Transmission

Function:
The automatic transmission is controlled electro-hydraulically.

The term "On Board Diagnostic" refers specifically to the electronic/electrical transmission controls.

Functions of transmission control module:
The control module receives information from components that effect the selection of gears and passes the information on to solenoid valves that control the spool valves in the valve body.

In the "Dynamic shift program" the control module reacts to the current driving conditions (e.g. descending hills, trailer towing) also the driver's style of driving (e.g. sporty driving style) and selects the shift points accordingly.

The control module is equipped with a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory so that in the event of an electronic/electrical component malfunction or an open circuit the cause can be determined quickly. Malfunctions are recognized by electrical signals and stored in the DTC memory.

Transmission control module DTC recognition:
The control module recognizes malfunctions during vehicle operation and stores them in a DTC memory. See Diagnostic Charts at Testing and Inspection. Testing and Inspection This information will remain available even if the system voltage fails.

The control module distinguishes between current malfunctions present (permanent) and temporary malfunctions (sporadic).

If a malfunction is no longer present after a certain period or a lengthy drive, it will be converted to a sporadic malfunction.

A malfunction will also be converted to sporadic, when the DTC memory is not erased after repairs.

Malfunctions which are stored in the DTC memory as sporadically occurring malfunctions will be displayed as "sporadic" when interrogated by the VAG 1551 scan tool. In such cases "SP" appears on the right side of the display. If the printer is switched ON, the printout will show "sporadic malfunction" after the identification of the malfunction.

If the sporadic malfunction does not occur again after a certain period of time or a lengthy drive, it will be erased from the DTC memory.

Safety functions of transmission control module:
If malfunctions occur while driving, the control module can activate a back-up function or an emergency running program. It can then affect the operation and smoothness of the gearshifts.

In emergency running with the control module functioning all segments in the selector lever position display in the instrument cluster will light up.

In emergency running with a faulty control module there will be no display in the selector lever position display.

The transmission will operate in emergency running until the malfunction is no longer recognized by the control module over a predetermined period of time.

VAG 1551 Scan Tool:
The possibilities offered by the On Board Diagnostic (OBD) can only be fully exploited with operating mode 1 "Rapid data transfer" of the VAG 1551 scan tool.

Functions which the VAG 1551 scan tool can register or perform. See "List of selectable functions" at Testing and Inspection. Testing and Inspection

Electrical malfunctions that affect vehicle performance can be determined with the VAG 1551 scan tool.
