Convertible Top, Removing And Installing

Removing
- Release and fold down rear seat backrest (lower section).







- Remove bolts - 1 - with washers and remove upper section of rear backrest - 2 - upward from rear crossmember - arrow -. Store upper section of rear backrest - 2 - with seatbelts in luggage compartment.
- Release convertible top and lift slightly (relieve pressure on convertible top).







- Unclip convertible top headliner - 1 - at left/right in rear corner areas.
- Open convertible top - as far as shown in illustration.
- Remove ball pin - 1 - and screw - 2 -.







- Remove cover - 3 - and lower convertible top completely.







- Remove convertible top headliner - arrow - at left/right.

Remove rear lid window hinge --> 09.00
- Remove bolts - 1 - at left and right from rear lid window hinges.







- Disconnect harness connector - 2 - for rear window heater and remove from rear window seal (first remove housing for flat connector).

Removing rear window hinge 10.00 -->
- Remove bolts - 1 - at left and right from rear lid window hinges.







- Disconnect harness connector - 2 - for rear window heater and remove from rear window seal (first remove housing for flat connector).

All models
- Remove clips for floor carpet ( Pry lever V.A.G 80-200 ).
- Remove combination bolts - 1 - (Qty 12) and remove convertible top mounting frame - 2 -.







Sealing band between convertible top mounting frame - 2 - and chassis can lead to light sticking of convertible top mounting frame.







- Set down convertible top mounting frame - 1 - with rear window - 2 - (remove electrical wires for rear window heater out of guide straps).







- Remove locking washer - 1 - from pin/hydraulic cylinder (gas-filled strut) - 2 -. Remove pin and hydraulic cylinder (gas-filled strut) from convertible top frame.

As of 09.95, gas-filled strut is only still installed on left side of convertible top.

- Remove bolts with washers - 1 - from hydraulic cylinder bracket (gas-filled strut).
- Remove bolts with spring washers - 2 - from main bearing.







- Remove convertible top from vehicle (second mechanic required).

Installing
- Installation is reverse order of removal.
