Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview
Function
Airbag Control Module J234 is located behind console on tunnel. It is equipped with DTC memory. Data Link Connector (DLC) is located behind cover under heater/ventilation controls.
Airbag Control Module J234 detects malfunctions in airbag system and stores them in permanent memory.
Malfunctions caused by sporadic open circuits or loose contacts are also stored. These malfunctions are indicated as sporadic "SP".
After ignition is switched on, Airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) K75 illuminates for about 4 seconds and then goes out again. If airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) blinks for a further 15 seconds, this indicates that passenger-side airbag is deactivated.
- If Airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) K75 does not go out after approx. 4 seconds, voltage supply for Airbag Control Module J234 is not OK. Check DTC memory. DTC Memory, Checking (Function 02)
- If Airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) K75 goes on again, there is a malfunction. Check DTC memory. DTC Memory, Checking (Function 02)
- If Airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) K75 continuously, Airbag Control Module J234 must be replaced.
Initiate On Board Diagnostic (OBD) to start troubleshooting.
Check stored data using Scan Tool (ST) V.A.G 1551 and check which components are malfunctioning using auxiliary airbag tester VAS 5056.
indicated diagnostic data leads to a DTC table with notes regarding potential malfunction causes and specific repair procedures.
CAUTION:
- Only check wire routing visually.
- Do NOT perform any electrical continuity tests or measurements in ignition circuit.
- Make sure ignition is switched OFF before checking wire routing.
