Condition

Airbag warning light ON, with Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) 00588 "Resistance too high" stored in DTC memory.

Note:
This Technical Bulletin should be used ONLY if Technical Bulletin, Group 01 number 00-02 dated Apr. 24, 2000 (Driver's Side Airbag On-Board Diagnostic) has been used without identifying the cause of the warning light activation.

Service

Remove driver side airbag unit

See Repair Manual, Repair Group 69, for detailed information.

CAUTION!
ALWAYS review and follow all CAUTIONS and WARNINGS in the Repair Manual regarding Airbags!

Replace airbag adapter wiring harness

Remove existing wiring harness as follows:

- Carefully pry violet secondary lock mechanism away from connector housing using a sharp knife or small screwdriver.





- Carefully pull three 0.35 mm terminals from steering column -arrows- out of existing connector housing. Note wire color and location prior to removal!

Prepare new harness, Part No. 1J0 971 584A:

- Remove two remaining wires (with blade and receptacle terminals) and discard.

CAUTION!
Part numbers are for reference only. Always check with your Parts Dept for the latest parts information.





- Replace with existing three 0.35 mm wires from steering column -arrow- in correct positions.

Note:
^ During terminal extraction, primary lock tab(s) may have been pressed into terminal.





^ Primary lock tab(s) should be straight and stand away from the terminal. Straighten using sharp edge to carefully lift tab to achieve approximately a 30° angle.

- To install into new connector, push terminal into appropriate socket as far as possible.

- Push violet secondary lock mechanism into connector housing until it snaps into place.

- Pull gently on terminals to ensure proper engagement.

Install driver airbag unit

- Connect electrical connector to back of airbag unit.

- Connect VAS 5051 Diagnostic Tool and verify that no DTC's are stored in fault memory.
