Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL), Operation

If malfunctions are recognized by the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- , the malfunctions will be indicated by turning on the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL). In vehicles from m.y. 2000, this is done by a signal from the ECM via the instrument cluster.

Location of Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL):

NOTE:

- The MIL can turn on in the "flashing" or "permanently on" mode. DTC memory must be checked in every case. Refer to "Displaying and Reading Trouble Codes" under Powertrain Management/Computers and Control Systems Testing and Inspection

- Flashing:

- A malfunction exists that can damage the Three Way Catalytic Converter (TWC) if driven in this condition. In this case, do not drive the vehicle using full performance!

- Permanently on:

- A malfunction exists that will increase exhaust emissions. Check DTC memory of the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) and/or automatic Transmission Control Module (TCM).

- If the MIL does not light up even though there is an engine running condition, or a customer has complained, check the DTC memory, because malfunctions that do not immediately turn on the MIL can also be stored.
