Special tools and equipment
- V.A.G1551 Scan Tool (ST) or VAG1552 mobile scan tool with VAG1551/3 adapter cable
- VAG1788/10 engine speed adjuster
Test requirements
- Vehicle stationary
- Automatic transmission selector lever in P (Park) or N (Neutral) position.
- Turn off all electrical consumers (e.g. lights and rear window defroster).
- Throttle valve angle less than 10 degree angle % display group 003, display field 3
- Coolant temperature at least 85 °C See display group 004, display field 3
- Intake air temperature less than 60 °C. See display group 0004, display field 4
Test Procedure
- Connect V.A.G1551 Scan Tool (ST) (VAG1552), then turn on ignition and select Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- by pressing buttons -0- an -1- to insert "Engine Electronics" address word 01. [1][2][3]Connecting VAG 1551 Scan Tool
Step 1: Check DTC memory
Indicated on display

- Press buttons -0- and -2- to select "Check DTC Memory" function 02 and press -Q- button to confirm input.
Indicated on display (number of stored DTCs, or "No DTC recognized").
X DTC recognized ->
If one or more DTCs are stored, the stored DTCs will be displayed and printed out one after the other.
If a DTC is stored:
- Using the DTC table repair malfunctions on print-out:
- Check print-out against DTC table and repair all malfunctions as necessary, VAG codes and SAE P0 codes and SAE P1 codes). Engine Control System P Code Charts
If no DTCs are stored:
- Press -> button.
Step 2: Erase DTC memory

- Press buttons -0- and -5- to select "Erase DTC Memory" function 05, and press -Q- button to confirm input.
NOTE: When erasing DTC memory, the readiness code is also erased.

Step 6: EVAP system and fuel tank leak detection
NOTE: The engine must not be loaded during this diagnostic because the diagnostic will be interrupted and will not be started again until the engine is revved-up.

- Maintain engine speed at 2800-3200 RPM until Three Way Catalytic Converter (TWC) temperature in display field 2 increases to above 352.0 °C.

Step 8: Three Way Catalytic Converter (TWC) diagnostic
NOTE: The diagnostic will only be terminated if the oxygen sensor aging diagnostic is first successfully completed.

The Three Way Catalytic Converter (TWC) temperature in display field 2 must be at least 352.0 °C.
- Check amplitude ratio in display field 3:
Specified value: max. 0.55
- Maintain engine speed at 2800-3200 RPM until "Cat B1 OK" appears in display field 4.
NOTE: The diagnostic of the Three Way Catalytic Converter (TWC) takes approx. 100 secs. If there is still no result in the display after 150 secs., change the engine speed within the tolerance.
Display Group 046:
- Remove VAG1788/10 engine speed adjuster from accelerator pedal.
- Press -> button.
- Press buttons -0- and -6- to select "End output" function 06 and press -Q- button to confirm input.
If the specified values are not attained:
