With Manufacturer's Scan Tool




Special tools and equipment

- V.A.G1551 Scan Tool (ST) or VAG1552 mobile scan tool with VAG1551/3 adapter cable







- VAG1788/10 engine speed adjuster

Test requirements
- Vehicle stationary
- Automatic transmission selector lever in P (Park) or N (Neutral) position.
- Turn off all electrical consumers (e.g. lights and rear window defroster).
- Throttle valve angle less than 10 degree angle % display group 003, display field 3
- Coolant temperature at least 85 °C See display group 004, display field 3
- Intake air temperature less than 60 °C. See display group 0004, display field 4

Test Procedure
- Connect V.A.G1551 Scan Tool (ST) (VAG1552), then turn on ignition and select Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- by pressing buttons -0- an -1- to insert "Engine Electronics" address word 01. [1][2][3]Connecting VAG 1551 Scan Tool

Step 1: Check DTC memory

- Press buttons -0- and -2- to select "Check DTC Memory" function 02 and press -Q- button to confirm input.

Indicated on display (number of stored DTCs, or "No DTC recognized").


X DTC recognized ->


If one or more DTCs are stored, the stored DTCs will be displayed and printed out one after the other.

If a DTC is stored:
- Using the DTC table repair malfunctions on print-out:
- Check print-out against DTC table and repair all malfunctions as necessary, VAG codes and SAE P0 codes and SAE P1 codes). Engine Control System P Code Charts

If no DTCs are stored:
- Press -> button.

Step 2: Erase DTC memory

Indicated on display

- Press buttons -0- and -5- to select "Erase DTC Memory" function 05, and press -Q- button to confirm input.


NOTE: When erasing DTC memory, the readiness code is also erased.

- Press -> button.


NOTE: If the ignition is turned off between "Check DTC memory" and "Erase DTC memory," DTC memory will not be erased.


- Press -> button.


Step 3: Adaptation of throttle valve control module to ECM

- After minimum of 30 seconds, press -> button in order to terminate engine basic setting.

- Check specifications in display field 3 and 4.


Display Group 098:






Step 4:
- Start engine and run at idle.


NOTE: Do not turn off the engine during the test sequence.


Step 5: Secondary Air Injection (AIR) system diagnostic

If the diagnostic is initiated from Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220-, the display in display field 4 changes from "Test OFF" to "Test ON."
- Allow engine to continue running at idle until "Syst. OK." is displayed in display field 4.


Display Group 077:






If the specified values are not indicated:
- Check DTC memory. Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes

If the specified values are indicated:
- Press -C- button.

Step 6: EVAP system and fuel tank leak detection


NOTE: The engine must not be loaded during this diagnostic because the diagnostic will be interrupted and will not be started again until the engine is revved-up.

If the diagnostic is initiated from Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220-, the display in display field 4 changes from "Test OFF" to "Test ON."
- Allow engine to continue running at idle until "TVV OK." is displayed in display field 4.


Display Group 070:






If the specified values are not indicated:
- Check DTC memory. Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes

If the specified values are indicated:
- Press button -3- (V.A.G1551) or button uparrow (VAG1552).

Indicated on display (1-4 = display fields)


System in basic setting 71 ->

- Run engine for 30 seconds at idle and check specifications:

If the diagnostic is initiated from Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- the display in display field 4 changes from "Test OFF" to "Test ON."
- Allow engine to continue running at idle until "Syst. OK." is displayed field 4.


Display Group 071:






If the specified values are not attained:
- Check DTC memory. Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes

If the specified values are attained:
- Press -> button.

Step 7: Oxygen sensor (O2S) aging (cycle duration monitor)

- Set engine speed of 2800-3200 RPM using VAG1788/10 engine speed adjuster.
- Maintain engine speed at 2800-3200 RPM until Three Way Catalytic Converter (TWC) temperature in display field 2 increases to above 352.0 °C.


NOTE: This process may take a few minutes.

- Press -C- button

If the specifications are not obtained:
- Check DTC memory. Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes

If the specifications are attained:
- Set engine speed of 2200-2800 RPM using VAG1788/10 engine speed adjuster.
- Press -> button.

- Maintain engine speed at 1800-2200 RPM until display in display field 4 changes from "Test OFF" to "Test ON."

Three Way Catalytic Converter (TWC) temperature in display field 2 must be at least 352.0 °C.

If the specified values are not attained:
- Check cycle duration in display field 3.
Specified value: maximum 2.20 seconds
- Maintain engine speed at 2200-2800 RPM until "B1-P1 OK" appears in display field 4.


Display Group 034:






If the specified values are not attained:
- Check DTC memory. Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes

If the specified values are attained:
- Press -C- button.

Step 8: Three Way Catalytic Converter (TWC) diagnostic


NOTE: The diagnostic will only be terminated if the oxygen sensor aging diagnostic is first successfully completed.

- Press buttons -0-, -4- and -6- to input display group number 46 (046) and press -Q- button to confirm input.

Indicated on display (1-4 = display fields)


System in basic setting 46 ->

- Raise engine speed to 2800-3200 RPM until display in display field 4 changes from "Test OFF" to "Test ON."
The Three Way Catalytic Converter (TWC) temperature in display field 2 must be at least 352.0 °C.
- Check amplitude ratio in display field 3:
Specified value: max. 0.55
- Maintain engine speed at 2800-3200 RPM until "Cat B1 OK" appears in display field 4.


NOTE: The diagnostic of the Three Way Catalytic Converter (TWC) takes approx. 100 secs. If there is still no result in the display after 150 secs., change the engine speed within the tolerance.


Display Group 046:






- Remove VAG1788/10 engine speed adjuster from accelerator pedal.
- Press -> button.
- Press buttons -0- and -6- to select "End output" function 06 and press -Q- button to confirm input.

If the specified values are not attained:
- Check DTC memory. Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes

If the specified values are indicated:
