Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor, Checking

Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor, checking

Recommended special tools and equipment
- V.A.G 1526 multimeter or V.A.G 1715 multimeter
- V.A.G 1594 connector test kit
- Wiring diagram

Requirements
- Respective fuses must be OK:
- Selector lever must be in -P- position.
- All electrical consumers such as, lights and rear window defroster must be switched off.
- Parking brake must be engaged.
- Ground (GND) connections to transmission must be OK.
- Ignition switched off.

Check Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor.

Test sequence
- Disconnect 12-pin harness connector at transmission.
Observe safety precautions
- Check harness connector for contact corrosion and ingress of water.

If harness connector is not OK:
- Repair the malfunction.
- Erase DTC memory of Transmission Control Module (TCM). Diagnostic Mode 4: Reset/Erase Diagnostic Data
- Generate readiness code. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes

If harness connector is OK:
- Check resistance of Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor -G93-.

Check sensor resistance.
- Re-connect 12-pin connector.
- Connect test box to control module wiring harness. Test Box, Connecting For Wiring Test
- Measure resistance of Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor -G93- at test box between sockets 6 + 67:

If one of the specified values is not obtained:
- Check wires to Transmission Control Module (TCM) according to wiring diagram.

Checking wires to Transmission Control Module (TCM)
- Disconnect 12-pin harness connector at transmission.

- Check wires between test box and 12-pin connector to Transmission Control Module (TCM) for open circuit according to wiring diagram.

Terminal 1 + socket 67
Terminal 12 + socket 6

Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms

- Check wires for short circuit to each other, to vehicle Ground (GND) and to B+.
Specified value: Infinity Ohms

If no malfunctions are found in wires:
- Replace circuit board with integrated Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor -G93-.
- Erase DTC memory of Transmission Control Module (TCM). Diagnostic Mode 4: Reset/Erase Diagnostic Data
- Generate readiness code. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes

Vehicles with 09A transmission

Note:
Sensor is located inside the transmission and is not accessible from the outside.

Test sequence

- Disconnect 20-pin harness connector -2-.
Observe safety precautions
- Check harness connector for contact corrosion and ingress of water.
If harness connector is not OK:
- Repair the malfunction.
- Erase DTC memory of Transmission Control Module (TCM). Diagnostic Mode 4: Reset/Erase Diagnostic Data
- Generate readiness code. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes

If harness connector is OK:
- Check wires to Transmission Control Module (TCM) according to wiring diagram.

Checking wires to Transmission Control Module (TCM)
- Connect test box to control module wiring harness.

- Check for open circuits in wires between test box and 20-pin harness connector to Transmission Control Module (TCM) according to wiring diagram.
Terminal 7 + socket 33
Terminal 8 + socket 34

Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms

- Check wires for short circuit to each other, to vehicle Ground (GND) and to B+.
Specified value: Infinity Ohms

If no malfunctions are found in wires:
- Check resistance of Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor -G93-.

Check sensor resistance.
- Re-connect 20-pin connector.
- Measure resistance of Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor -G93- at test box between sockets 33 +34:

- Check wires between test box sockets for short circuit to Ground (GND) and short circuit to B+ according to wiring diagram:
Socket 1 + 33
Socket 1 + 34
Socket 33 + 68
Socket 34 + 68

Specified value: Infinity Ohms

If specified values are obtained:
- Replace Transmission Control Module (TCM) -J217-.

If one of the specified values is not obtained:
- Check internal wire in valve body:

If no malfunctions are found in the internal wires:
- Replace Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor -G93-.
- Erase DTC memory of Transmission Control Module (TCM). Diagnostic Mode 4: Reset/Erase Diagnostic Data
- Generate readiness code. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes
