Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) (Function 03)
Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM), Initiating
The output DTM activates the following components in the stated sequence:
1. Activated charcoal filter solenoid valve 1 (N80)
2. Secondary air inlet valve (N112)
3. Secondary air inlet pump relay (J299)
4. Wastegate Bypass Regulator Valve (N75)
5. Fuel system diagnostic pump (V144)
6. Recirculating valve for turbocharger (N249)
Special tools, test equipment and auxiliary items
- V.A.G 1551 scan tool or vehicle system tester V.A.G 1552 with cable V.A.G 1551/3B
- Test box V.A.G 1598/31
- Hand multimeter V.A.G 1526 or multimeter VAG 1715
- Diode test lamp V.A.G 1527
- Adapter set V.A.G 1594
- Wiring diagram
Test conditions
- The main fuses must be OK
- The fuses No. 10, 28, 29, 32 and 43 must be OK
NOTE:
- The output DTM can only be carried out if the engine is stationary and ignition switched on.
- The output DTM will be aborted if the engine is started or a rotational impulse is recognized.
- During the output DTM the individual final controls will be activated for approx. 60 seconds or until advancing to the next final control by pressing the -> button.
- The final controls are checked acoustically or by touching.
- The electric fuel pump will run during the complete output DTM.
- The output DTM will be aborted after 10 minutes.
- Run engine briefly first if there is a requirement to repeat output DTM.
Work sequence
- Connect the scan tools V.A.G 1551 or 1552. Then switch ignition on and select engine control module with the "Address word" 01.

03 Output Diagnostic Test Mode
Activating activated charcoal filter solenoid valve 1 (N80):
- Confirm input with Q key.

Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
EVAP canister purge regulator valve -N80
The activated charcoal filter solenoid valve 1 must click until the next final control is activated by pressing -> key.
The valve clicks but a malfunction is still suspected (valve does not open or close):
- Pull hose from pressure retention valve off solenoid valve.
- Connect an auxiliary hose to the vacant valve connection.
- Blow into auxiliary hose during output DTM (in direction of throttle valve control module).
Valve must open and close
If the relay does not click:
- Pull the 2 pin connector off solenoid valve (N80) -arrow-.
- Connect diode test lamp V.A.G 1527 using adapter cables from V.A.G 1594 to detached connector.
The LED must flash (bright/darker)
LED flashes:
- Proceed with output DTM until completed.
- Switch off ignition.
- Replace solenoid valve (N80):
- Check DTC memory, if necessary, repair any malfunctions and then erase DTC memory, checking and erasing DTC memory. Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes
- Read-out the readiness code. If the DTC memory has been erased or the engine control module was disconnected from permanent positive, the readiness code must be generated again. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes
LED does not flash:
- Proceed with output DTM until completed.
- Switch off ignition.
- Remove inner plenum chamber cover, left:
- Connect test box V.A.G 1598/31 to control module wiring harness. The engine control module is not connected by this action.
- Check wire for open circuit between test box socket 64 and 2-pin connector contact 2 using wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms
- Additionally check wire for short to battery positive and Ground.
Specification: Infinity Ohms
- Check wire between 2 pin connector contact 1 and fuel pump relay (J17) for open circuit using wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms
If no wiring problems are detected:
- Replace engine control module.
Activating secondary air inlet valve (N112):
- Press -> key.

Secondary air inlet valve -N112
The secondary air inlet valve must run until the next control element is activated by pressing the -> key.
If the relay does not click:
- Pull 2-pin connector off secondary air inlet valve (N112) -arrow-.
- Connect diode test lamp V.A.G 1527 using adapter cables from V.A.G 1594 to detached connector.
The LED must flash (bright/darker)
LED flashes:
- Proceed with output DTM until completed.
- Switch off ignition.
- Replace secondary air inlet valve (N112):
- Check DTC memory, if necessary, repair any malfunctions and then erase DTC memory, checking and erasing DTC memory. Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes

LED does not flash:
- Proceed with output DTM until completed.
- Switch off ignition.
- Remove inner plenum chamber cover, left:
- Connect test box V.A.G 1598/31 to control module wiring harness. The engine control module is not connected by this action.
- Check wire for open circuit between test box socket 9 + 2 pin connector contact 2 using wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms
- Additionally check wire for short to battery positive and Ground.
Specification: Infinity Ohms
- Check wire between 2 pin connector contact 1 and fuel pump relay (J17) for open circuit using wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms
If no wiring problems are detected:
- Replace engine control module.
Activating secondary air pump relay (J299):
- Press -> key.

Secondary air pump relay -J299
The secondary air pump relay (J299) activates the secondary air pump motor, and this must run at intervals until the next control element is activated by pressing the key.
If the secondary air pump motor (V101) does not run at intervals:
- Pull 2-pin connector off secondary air pump motor (V101) -arrow-.
- Connect diode test lamp V.A.G 1527 using adapter cables from V.A.G 1594 to detached connector.
The LED must flash
LED flashes:
- Proceed with output DTM until completed.
- Switch off ignition.
- Replace secondary air pump motor (V101):
- Check DTC memory, if necessary, repair any malfunctions and then erase DTC memory, checking and erasing DTC memory. Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes
- Read-out the readiness code. If the DTC memory has been erased or the engine control module was disconnected from permanent positive, the readiness code must be generated again. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes
If the LED does not flash but the secondary air pump relay clicks
- Proceed with output DTM until completed.
- Switch off ignition.
- Check the wire between secondary air pump motor (V101) contact 1 and body Ground for open circuit.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms
If no wiring malfunctions are detected:
- Pull secondary air pump relay -arrow- off relay plate in control module protective housing.
NOTE:
- If tools are necessary to pull relays or control modules out of the relay plate, first disconnect battery Ground strap.
- Before disconnecting battery Ground strap obtain code for radios with anti-theft coding.
- Using wiring diagram check wire between secondary air pump motor (V101) contact 2 and contact 2 on relay plate for open circuit.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms
If no wiring malfunctions are detected:
- Using wiring diagram check the voltage supply contact 1 (terminal 30) for secondary air pump relay (J299).
If voltage supply is OK:
- Replace the secondary air pump relay (J299).
- Check DTC memory, if necessary, repair any malfunctions and then erase DTC memory, checking and erasing DTC memory. Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes
- Read-out the readiness code. If the DTC memory has been erased or the engine control module was disconnected from permanent positive, the readiness code must be generated again. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes
If the LED does not flash and the secondary air pump relay does not click:
- Proceed with output DTM until completed.
- Switch off ignition.
- Pull secondary air pump relay -arrow- off relay plate in control module protective housing.
NOTE:
- If tools are necessary to pull relays or control modules out of the relay plate, first disconnect battery Ground strap.
- Before disconnecting battery Ground strap obtain code for radios with anti-theft coding.
- Perform output DTM again and activate secondary air pump relay (J299).
- Using adapter cables from V.A.G 1594 connect the diode test lamp V.A.G 1527 to contacts 3 and 4 on the relay plate.
The LED must flash
LED flashes:
- Proceed with output DTM until completed.
- Switch off ignition.
- Replace the secondary air pump relay (J299).
- Check DTC memory, if necessary, repair any malfunctions and then erase DTC memory, checking and erasing DTC memory. Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes
- Read-out the readiness code. If the DTC memory has been erased or the engine control module was disconnected from permanent positive, the readiness code must be generated again. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes
LED does not flash:
- Using adapter cables from V.A.G 1594 connect the diode test lamp V.A.G 1527 to contact 3 of relay plate and body Ground.
The LED must light-up
LED does not light-up:
- Proceed with output DTM until completed.
- Switch off ignition.
- Using wiring diagram check the wire between contact 3 of the relay plate and the fuel pump relay (J17) for open circuit.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms
LED lights up:
- Proceed with output DTM until completed.
- Switch off ignition.
- Remove inner plenum chamber cover, left:
- Connect test box V.A.G 1598/31 to control module wiring harness. The engine control module is not connected by this action.
- Check the wire between test box socket 66 and contact 4 on the relay plate for open circuit using wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: Max. 1.5 Ohms
If no wiring problems are detected:
- Replace engine control module.
Activating charge pressure limitation solenoid valve (N75)
- Press -> key.

Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Wastegate bypass regulator valve -N75
Solenoid valve must continue to click until the next output DTM is initiated by pressing the -> button.
NOTE: The clicking of the valve is difficult to hear and is therefore best checked by touch.
If the solenoid valve does not click:
- Pull the 2 pin connector off solenoid valve (N75) -arrow-.
- Connect diode test lamp V.A.G 1527 using adapter cables from V.A.G 1594 to detached connector.
The LED must flash
LED flashes:
- Proceed with output DTM until completed.
- Switch off ignition.
- Replace solenoid valve (N75).
LED does not flash:
- Proceed with output DTM until completed.
- Switch off ignition.
- Remove inner plenum chamber cover, left:
- Connect test box V.A.G 1598/31 to control module wiring harness. The engine control module is not connected by this action.
- Check wire between test box socket 104 + 2 pin connector contact 2 for open circuit using wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms
- Additionally check wire for short to battery positive and Ground.
Specification: Infinity Ohms
- Check wire between 2 pin connector contact 1 and fuel pump relay (J17) for open circuit using wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms
If no wiring malfunctions are detected:
- Replace engine control module.
Activating fuel system diagnostic pump (V144)
- Press -> key.

Leak diag. pump tank breathing system
The fuel system diagnostic pump must click until the Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) is terminated by pressing the -> button.
If the diagnostic pump does not click:
- Remove rear right wheel housing liner
- Pull the 3-pin connector -arrow- off the diagnostic pump (V144).
- Connect diode test lamp V.A.G 1527 between detached connector contacts 2 and 3 using adapter cables from V.A.G 1594.
The LED must flash (bright/darker)
LED flashes:
- Proceed with output DTM until completed.
- Switch off ignition.
- Replace fuel supply system diagnostic pump (V144):
- Check DTC memory, if necessary, repair any malfunctions and then erase DTC memory, checking and erasing DTC memory. Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes
- Read-out the readiness code. If the DTC memory has been erased or the engine control module was disconnected from permanent positive, the readiness code must be generated again. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes
LED does not flash:
- Proceed with output DTM until completed.
- Switch off ignition.
- Remove inner plenum chamber cover, left:
- Connect test box V.A.G 1598131 to control module wiring harness. The engine control module is not connected by this action.
- Check wiring for open circuit between test box and 3-pin connector using wiring diagram.
- Contact 1 + socket 80
- Contact 2 + socket 25
- Wire resistance: Max. 1.5 Ohms
- Additionally check wire for short to battery positive and Ground.
Specification: Infinity Ohms
- Check wire for open circuit between 3-pin connector contact 3 and fuel pump relay (J17) using wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms
If no wiring problems are detected:
- Replace engine control module.
Recirculating valve for turbocharger -N249- activating:
- Press -> key.

Recirculating valve for turbocharge -N249
Solenoid valve must continue to click until the next output DTM is initiated by pressing the -> button.
If the solenoid valve does not click:
- Pull the 2 pin connector off solenoid valve 1 (N249) -arrow-
- Connect diode test lamp V.A.G 1527 using adapter cables from V.A.G 1594 to detached connector.
The LED must flash
LED flashes:
- Proceed with output DTM until completed.
- Switch off ignition.
- Replace solenoid valve (N249).
LED does not flash:
- Proceed with output DTM until completed.
- Switch off ignition.
- Remove inner plenum chamber cover, left:
- Connect test box V.A.G 1598/31 to control module wiring harness. The engine control module is not connected by this action.
- Check wire between test box socket 105 + 2 pin connector contact 2 for open circuit using wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms
- Additionally check wire for short to battery positive and Ground.
Specification: Infinity Ohms
- Check wire between 2 pin connector contact 1 and fuel pump relay (J17) for open circuit using wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms
If no wiring malfunctions are detected:
- Replace engine control module.
NOTE: After completion of the output DTM switch off ignition. If the ignition is not switched off before attempting to start, the engine will not start, as the injectors and the ignition transformer will not be activated.
