Glow Plugs -Q6-, Checking
Special tools
- Fluke 83 multimeter
- VW 1594 Adaptor kit
- VAG 1527B Voltage tester
- 3220 swivel socket with extension
Checking conditions
- Battery voltage 11.5 Volts minimum
- Ignition switched OFF
- Diesel direct injection system Engine Control Module J248 OK
- S163 Glow plug strip fuse OK
- Production number on reverse side of glow plug relay must be: "180"
Checking sequence
- Disconnect harness connector from Engine Coolant Temperature -G62- sensor -arrow-.
NOTE: Disconnecting -G62- simulates "engine cold" condition. Switching ON ignition initiates normal glow period.
- Disconnect glow plug harness connectors from Glow Plugs -Q6-.
- Switch ON ignition.
- Switch Fluke 83 multimeter to 20 Volt range.
- Connect multimeter between cyl. 1 glow plug harness connector and Ground then repeat checking sequence for cylinders 2, 3 and 4.
- Specification: Battery voltage for approx. 20 secs.
If voltage present
- Switch OFF ignition.
- Disconnect harness connectors from glow plugs.
- Connect VAG 1527B Voltage tester lead to Battery + using jumper wire from VW 1594 adaptor kit.
- Touch tester probe to each glow plug, one after the other.
- If diode lights up: glow plug OK
- If diode does not light up: replace glow plug
- Remove and install glow plugs using 3220 swivel socket.
- Tightening torque: 15 Nm (11 ft lb)
- Erase DTC memory. Refer to "Displaying and Reading Trouble Codes/With Manufacturers Scan Tool/DTC Memory Checking and Erasing", Testing and Inspection
- Set the Readiness code. Refer to "Monitors, Trips and/or Drive Cycle (Readiness Codes)/Setting Readiness Code" Testing and Inspection
