Brake Pads, Removing And Installing
Special Tools And Equipment
^ 3272 Resetting and removal tool
^ VAG 1331 Torque wrench or equivalent
^ Piston resetting tool
CAUTION!
^ If re-using brake pads, mark pad position before removing. Re-install brake pads in their original position to prevent uneven braking.
Removing
- Remove wheels.
- Remove clip -1-.
- Press brake lever -2- in direction of arrow and unhook brake cable -3-.
- Remove bolts from brake caliper housing by counter holding on guide pins.
- Remove brake pads and pad retaining springs (arrows).
- Clean brake caliper housing, especially bonding surface for brake pad. Bonding surfaces must be free of adhesive and grease residues.
Installing
WARNING!
^ Brake fluid is poisonous. Never siphon brake fluid by mouth.
CAUTION!
^ Extract some of the brake fluid from the brake fluid reservoir before pushing the pistons back.
^ A full brake fluid reservoir may allow brake fluid to How out and cause damage when pistons are pushed back.
^ Use the bleeder bottle or plastic bottle which is used only for brake fluid.
- Screw in piston by turning knurled wheel of special tool 3272 clockwise.
^ Install special tool 3272 with the collar (arrow) of the tool seated on the brake caliper
^ If the piston is difficult to move, use a 73 mm open end wrench on the flats (arrow -A-) provided for this purpose.
^ If the piston is pushed back with a piston resetting tool the automatic adjustment in the brake caliper will be destroyed.
- Pull protective foil off outer brake pad backing plate.
- Insert brake pads and brake pad retaining springs (arrows) into brake carrier.
- Install brake caliper housing with new self-locking bolts.
Note:
^ The repair kit includes four self-locking bolts which must always be installed.
- Press brake lever -2- indirection of arrow and attach parking brake cable.
- Install clip -1-.
- Adjust parking brake if necessary. Adjustments
- Install wheels.
CAUTION!
^ After installing now brake pads, depress brake pedal firmly several times with vehicle stationary to seat brake pads to brake disc.
^ After changing brake pads check brake fluid level.
^ Operate the foot brake first after adjusting the parking broke.
