Installation Notes
Installation notes
Installation is carried out in the reverse sequence, when doing this note the following:
- Check whether dowel sleeves for centralizing engine/transmission are in cylinder block, install if necessary.
- Install intermediate plate onto sealing flange and slide onto dowel sleeves -arrows-.
Vehicles with manual transmission
- Check centering of clutch drive plate, if necessary.
- Check clutch release bearing for wear, replace if necessary.
- Lightly grease clutch release bearing and splines on input shaft with MS02 grease. (Do not grease release bearing guide).
- Install hydraulic clutch slave cylinder
- Install selector mechanism
- If necessary adjust shifting cables.
Vehicles with automatic transmission
- When replacing nuts that secure torque converter to drive plate, only use approved ones from VW parts program.
- Replace selector cable anchorage locking washer.
- Install Transmission Range selector cable on transmission, adjust if necessary:
Vehicles with air conditioner
- Install Generator.
- Install compact bracket including tightening element for ribbed V-belt
- Install A/C compressor.
Continued for all vehicles
- When installing engine/transmission assembly, ensure sufficient clearance to front subframe, drive axles and radiator.
- While installing, guide power steering pressure line past transmission.
- Align engine/transmission in transverse direction so there is a distance between engine mount and engine support.
Aligning engine and transmission mounts, Refer to Engine Mount, Adjustments
- Do not stress engine and transmission mounting points during installation (aligned parallel to each other)
Note: Tightening torques of mounts, Refer to Engine Mount, Specifications
- Install left-hand drive shaft and reconnect righthand drive shaft at transmission:
Refer to Transmission and Drivetrain
- Install right hand inner CV joint protective cover on engine, if equipped.
- Install front exhaust pipe with catalyst
- Install power steering pump.
- Install Secondary Air Injection pump motor V101 on bracket.
- Install intake manifold upper section:
- Adjusting accelerator cable.
- Install ribbed belt.
- Install Air Cleaner.
- Check electrical connections and wire routing
- Fill system with engine coolant
- Install sound dampening tray.
- Make a test drive and check DTC memory.
Refer to Powertrain Management
- If malfunctions occur:
- Display Readiness code.
- Check Readiness code.
- Readiness code must be reset if J220 Engine Control Module (ECM) is replaced or subjected to low voltage with ignition on.
