Instrument Panel, Gauges and Warning Indicators: Description and Operation
NOTE:
The instrument cluster is installed in conjunction with vehicle equipment level, and there are different versions:
- Vehicles with manual transmission have the trip odometer display
- Vehicles with automatic transmission have trip odometer display and gear selector lever position display.
Malfunction recognition and malfunction display
The instrument cluster has On Board Diagnostic (OBD) capability, which is an aid to troubleshooting.
If the instrument cluster control module detects a malfunction for any of the following that is non-repairable, then "dEF" will appear in the trip recorder display.
- Odometer
- Odometer number (distance travelled number) (K number)
- Speedometer calibration
If so:
- Replace instrument cluster refer to "Instrument Cluster, Removing and Installing".
If the instrument cluster control module detects a malfunction and nothing is displayed on the trip recorder display, carry out the following work before removing the instrument cluster:
- Check DTC memory with VAG1551 scan tool refer to "Instrument Cluster on Board Diagnostic". Testing and Inspection
- Read service interval display values and odometer reading with VAG1551 scan tool and note the values refer to "Instrument Cluster on Board Diagnostic/Reading Measuring Value Block, Function 08". Testing and Inspection
If the malfunction indicates that the instrument cluster requires replacement, the recorded values can be entered in the new instrument cluster.
