Function 07: Code Control Module
NOTE:
- A 5-character code must always be displayed during the Control Module identification.
- The Control Module must be re-coded if the appropriate coding is not displayed or the ECM has been replaced.
Special tools, workshop equipment, testers, measuring instruments and auxiliary items required
- VAG 1551 Scan Tool with VAG 1551/3 Adaptor cable.
Work sequence
- Connect VAG 1551/1552 Scan Tool. [1][2][3][4]Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes
- Switch ON ignition but do NOT start engine
- Press buttons -0- and -1- to select address word 01: "Engine electronics"
- Press buttons -1- and -1- to select address word 11: "Login procedure"

- Press -Q- button to enter input
- Switch OFF ignition.
NOTE: The coding values entered and shown on the display will not be used by the Motronic Control Module UNTIL the ignition has been switched OFF once.
Incorrect coding leads to:
- Engine running malfunctions (gearchange jerking, load change jerking, etc.)
- Increased fuel consumption
- Increased exhaust gas emissions
- Malfunctions stored in DTC memory which do not actually exist.
- Some Functions will not be performed (Oxygen sensor control, Evaporative emissions system activation , etc.).
- Traction control will not function for front wheel drive vehicles (TC warning lamp comes ON)
- Reduced transmission life
