Fuel Pump, Checking


Special tools and equipment
- 3217 Ring nut wrench
- VAG1318 Pressure tester
- VAG1318/1 Pressure gauge adapter
- VAG 1318/11 Adapter
- 1318/17 adapter
- VAG 1318/23 Fuel line feed adapter












- VAG 1348 Fuel measuring unit
- VAG 1466 A Electrical circuit tester
- VAG 1527 B Voltage tester
- VW1594A Adapter kit
- VAG1715 Multimeter, or equivalent
- VAG 1332 Torque wrench 40 to 200 Nm (30 to 148 ft lb) (not shown)
- Measuring container (not shown)
- Wiring diagram (not shown)

Check conditions







- Fuse 28 OK
- Battery voltage 11.5 Volts minimum


NOTE: Observe description of function of crash fuel shut-off.


Checking function and voltage supply
- Fold rear seat bench forwards.
- Remove cover from fuel delivery unit.
- Briefly operate starter.
- Fuel pump must be heard to run.
- Switch OFF ignition.

If fuel pump does not run:
- Remove cover in front of fuse holder.







- Pull fuse 28 out of fuse holder.
- Connect VAG1348/3A remote control between terminal 28a to fuel pump and battery positive ( + ) using VAG1348/3-2 adapter cable.
- Operate remote control.

If fuel pump runs:
- Check activation of fuel pump relay J17 using Wiring Diagram:

If fuel pump does not run:







- Disconnect 4-pin harness connector from fuel delivery unit flange.







- Connect VAG1527B Voltage tester to outer terminals of connector using jumper wires from VW 1594 Adapter kit.
- Operate remote control.
- LED must light up

If LED does not light up:
- Locate and eliminate open circuit using wiring diagram:


If LED lights up (Voltage supply OK):







- Remove union nut with 3217 wrench.
- Ensure that electrical wires between flange and fuel pump are connected.

If no open circuit can be found:
- Fuel pump faulty, replace fuel delivery unit
