Wiper and Washer Systems: Service and Repair




Windshield wiper system, removing and installing


CAUTION!
Before working on the electrical system:
- Determine the correct coding for the anti-theft radio.
- Disconnect the battery Ground (GND) strap.
- After reconnecting battery, re-code and check operation of anti-theft radio. Also check operation of clock and power windows.



Special tools and equipment







VAG1331 torque wrench (5 - 50 Nm)

Wiper arms, removing

NOTE:
- The wiper arm and cowl panel must be removed to remove the wiper frame with rods and wiper motor.
- Before removing the wiper arms, make sure the wiper motor is in park position. Only then can wiper arm end position be correctly set when re-installing.







- Pry off black cover caps (arrows) using screwdriver.







- Loosen hex nuts M8 (arrows), but do not remove completely.
- Move wiper arms lightly until they release.
- Remove hex nuts completely and remove wiper arms.

Cowl panel, removing


NOTE: The cowl panel is attached to a window guide underneath the windshield.


- Pull up plenum panel rubber gasket -1 - and remove.







- Carefully pry cowl panel off -2- upward.


Wiper assembly, removing







- Remove hex screws (arrows) and pull plenum panel divider -1- slightly forward.







- Remove M6 hex bolts (arrows) and washers.
- Disconnect harness connector off wiper motor.
- Remove wiper frame complete.

Wiper motor, removing from frame







- Pry rods -1- off crank using large screwdriver.
- Unbolt three securing bolts M6 -2- from wiper motor.
- Remove wiper motor from wiper frame.
- Remove hex nut M8 -3-.
- Remove crank.

Wiper motor, installing in frame
- Run motor to park position, connect harness connector and operate wiper switch briefly.
- Disconnect harness connector again and tighten M6 motor securing bolts.

Tightening torque: 8 Nm (71 in. lb)







- Install crank and align so rods are in line, see illustration.
- Tighten M8 hex nut and press rods onto crank again.

Tightening torque: 20 Nm (15 ft lb)
