Transmission Cover, Replacing (Recalculating Shim S4)
If only the transmission cover is replaced, it is only necessary to remeasure the S4 shim.
- Clean housing mating surface.
- Place pinion into cover and turn 8 rotations so that tapered roller bearings can settle.





- Set up measuring tools.
- Set dial indicator (3mm measuring range) to zero with 1mm preload.
- Remove holder VW 387 complete with dial indicator.
- Remove pinion and bearing outer race along with pressure plate, shim and washer and install in new cover.
- Place dial indicator with holder VW 387 on new cover as shown.
- Note dial indicator reading and calculate required shim thickness.

Example:





- If gauge reading is larger than 1.00mm, thickness of shim S4 must be reduces by value X.
- Install transmission cover and check preload of pinion tapered roller bearings.
