Wiper and Washer Systems: Service and Repair




Windshield Wiper System, Removing And Installing


CAUTION!
Before beginning repairs on the electrical system:
- Obtain the anti-theft radio security code.
- Switch the ignition off.
- Disconnect the battery Ground (GND) strap.
- After reconnecting battery, re-code and check operation of anti-theft radio.


Special tools, testers and auxiliary items needed








- VAG 1331 Torque wrench (or equivalent 5 - 50 Nm)

Wiper Arms, Removing


NOTE:

- The wiper arms and windshield cowl panel must be removed in order to remove the wiper assembly (consisting of wiper motor, frame, wiper shafts and linkages).
- The housing for the control modules (in left side of plenum) must also be released and pushed forwards.
- Before removing wiper arms, ensure that wiper motor is in park position. This ensures proper wiper arm/blade park position when reinstalling.







- Pry off wiper arm cap -arrow- with a screwdriver.







- Loosen M8 nuts -arrows-, but do not remove completely.
- Lift wiper arms lightly until they release from tapered shaft.
- Remove nut completely and remove wiper arms.

Air Intake Plenum Cover, Removing







- Open front hood.
- Slide battery cover -1- in direction of -arrow A- and remove.
- Remove rubber seal -2- in direction of -arrow B-.
- Pull cover -3- forward and remove.

Windshield Cowl Panel, Removing


NOTE:
On vehicles Up To 10.00, the cowl panel is attached to the panel edge below the windshield and secured by two panel clips and a Phillips head screw.







- Pull left panel clip -arrow- forwards.







- Pull center panel clip -arrow- forwards.







- Vehicles Up To 10.00: remove screw -arrow- and carefully lift cowl panel upwards.
- Vehicles From 10.00 carefully lift cowl panel upwards.







- Remove screws -arrows- for ECM cover, lift cover and set aside.







- Remove hex nut -arrow- in housing.







- Remove hex nut -arrow- on housing.
- Pull housing from rubber mounting and push forwards.

Wiper Assembly, Removing







- Disconnect electrical connector from wiper motor.
- Remove M6 Hex bolts and washers -arrow-.
- Remove complete assembly.

Removing Wiper Motor From Frame







- Pry linkages -1- from wiper motor crank using a large screwdriver.
- Remove M8 hex nut -2-.
- Remove wiper motor crank.
- Remove all M6 mounting bolts -3-.

Installing wiper motor in frame


NOTE:
Ensure that wiper motor is in park position. If necessary, connect the electrical connector and operate wiper switch briefly. Electrical connector must be disconnected again prior to installation.


- Install all M6 hex bolts to secure motor.
Tightening torque: 8 Nm (71 in lb)
