Input Gear

Input Gear, Adjusting
- Insert input shaft with inner race of inner tapered roller bearing.

- Tighten socket head fastener to 100 Nm (74 ft. lbs.) without dished washer and without shim.
A - Torque wrench
B - 22 mm socket
- Parking lock must be engaged.
- Remove socket head fastener.

- Measure distance between input gear -B- and tapered roller bearing inner race -A-.
- Insert dial indicator and zero with a preload of 3 mm (0.118 inch). Note reading (example 1.00 mm).
Thickness of dished washer 1.50 mm (0.059 inch) must be added to the reading of = 2.50 mm (0.098 inch).

Determining shim
Specified bearing preload is achieved if the bearing preload of 0.18 mm (0.007 inch) is deducted from the figure obtained from the measurement (dished washer + reading) of 2.50 mm (0.098 inch)

Example:

- Determine shim by referring to table and place on drive shaft.
- Insert axial needle bearing for input shaft.
- Bearing installation position; refer to Input shaft, removing and installing. Service and Repair
- Tighten socket head fastener and dished washer to 250 Nm (184 ft. lbs.).

Table of "shims" for input gear
Various tolerances enable required shim thickness to be measured precisely.

Friction torque, checking
^ Transmission removed; differential installed
Friction torque can only be checked if tapered roller bearings have been replaced.
If tapered roller bearings have not been replaced, friction torque must not be checked. Then adjust input gear as described.
A - Torque gauge, commercially available, 0...600 Ncm
B - Wrench socket (41 mm AF)
- Read off friction torque. Friction torque with input gear installed must be approx. 145 ... 245 Ncm (13 inch lbs.....22 inch lbs.) higher than when input gear is not installed.
