Final Drive/Transmission Housing Oil Seal, Replacing

Final drive/transmission housing oil seal, replacing
Special tools, and auxiliary items
^ Extractor lever VW 681
^ Press tool 3383
^ Oil extractor VAG 1358 A
A malfunctioning oil seal will allow ATF or gear oil to escape into the torque converter bell housing via the central breather in the oil seal (between the two sealing lips).
A malfunctioning oil seal will also allow ATF to enter the final drive; this will then become over-filled and oil will escape via the final drive breather.

Removing
- Raise vehicle.
- Remove front wheels.

- Remove right axle shaft noise insulation from wheel house (arrows).
- Remove right axle shaft protective plate.
- Remove axle shafts

- Remove flanged shaft bolt (arrow) (use pin to prevent flange from turning).
- Draw oil from final drive using oil extractor VAG 1358 A.
- Place drain pan under transmission.
- Remove right flanged shaft.
- Remove right transmission support.
- Remove final drive cover bolts, and remove cover.
- Remove differential.

- Remove tapered roller bearing outer race -1- for differential and shim -2- (behind outer race) from transmission housing by hand.
Thickness of shim -2- is measured; the shim must not be replaced with another shim of different thickness.
- Remove left flanged shaft.

- Remove (pull) oil seal.
Oil seal extractor lever must be applied behind the oil seals two sealing lips. Do not apply lever to seal outer circumference, as this would damage the sealing surface in the transmission. Guide lever carefully when removing seal.

Installing
- Examine oil seal seat in transmission for damage; reface surface if necessary.
Lightly lubricate outer circumference and sealing lip of oil seal with ATF

- Push seal onto press piece 3383 with the protruding sealing lip on the seal (arrow) facing towards the tool.

- Drive new seal in onto stop.

- Insert shim -2- and tapered roller bearing outer race -1- for differential onto stop in transmission housing by hand.

- Replace O-ring (arrow).
- Install differential in transmission housing.

- Install final drive cover.
Tightening sequence:
^ Stage 1: tighten bolts -1-, -2- and -3- hand-tight.
^ Stage 2: tighten bolts -1- to -12- to specified torques in the sequence indicated.
- Install left flanged shaft.
- Install right flanged shaft.
- With transmission installed, check final drive oil level. Differential Fluid - A/T
