Rear Final Drive, Removing And Installing

^ VAG1383A engine/transmission jack with VAG1359/2 universal transmission mount





^ VAG1332 Torque wrench

Removing





- Mark position of rear drive shaft on constant velocity joint with paint (arrows -A- and -B-).
- Disconnect drive shaft from rear final drive and tie-up.





- Remove cover plate on rear final drive (arrow).
- Unbolt left and right-hand drive axles and tie-up.





- Place VAG1383 A engine/transmission jack with VAG1359/2 universal mount under final drive and support final drive.





- Remove bolts securing final drive front mounting bracket (arrows).





- Remove bolts securing rear final drive rear mounting bracket (arrows).
- Lower rear final drive.

Installing
Installation is the reverse of removal, when installing note the following:
- Always replace securing bolts for drive shaft.
- Clean threads in drive flange for rear final drive drive shaft of locking fluid remains. Threads can be cleaned using thread tap. Otherwise securing bolts can shear when screwing in.





- Make sure that marks on drive shaft (arrow -A-) and rear final drive(arrow -B-) flanges are in line.
- Replace gaskets for drive axles and drive shaft (remove protective foil and adhere gasket to joint).
- Check rear final drive oil level.





Tightening Torques
