ABS system front axle components, removing and installing
1. ABS wheel speed sensor
- Before installing sensor, clean hole inner surfaces
- Replacing. Refer to ABS system front axle components, removing and installing.
2. Drive axle with rotor
- Check rotor for damage and cleanliness. Refer to Front axle wheel speed sensor, removing and installing.
- If rotor is damaged, replace outer drive axle joint.
- Outer joint supplied with rotor as replacement part
3. Hex bolt
- Replace after each removal.
Vehicle must be on the ground when torquing
Tightening torques:
Bolt M14:
- 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs.) and turn 90° further
Bolt M16:
- 190 Nm (140 ft. lbs.) and turn 90° further
4. Clamping sleeve
- Always replace after removal
- Left and right identical
- Before installing in wheel house, coat all around with brake cylinder paste
- Push into wheel bearing housing onto stop
5. Sealing sleeve
Front axle wheel speed sensor, removing and installing
Special tools required
Removing
- Loosen wheel bolts.
- Raise vehicle.
- Remove wheel.
- Release grommet -1- in wheel housing.
- Disconnect wheel speed sensor connections -2-.
- Unclip wheel speed sensor from retainers (arrows).
- Pull ABS wheel speed sensor from wheel bearing housing.
Installing
- Install wheel speed sensor sleeve.
- Coat wheel speed sensor with brake cylinder paste.
- Install ABS while wheel speed sensor.
- Place wheel speed sensor wire in retainers and install grommet in wheel housing.
- Install wheels and tighten to 120 Nm (89 ft. lbs.).
- Turn wheels fully to left and right stops and check clearance to wheel speed sensor wiring.
Front axle rotor, checking or removing/installing
- Raise vehicle.
- Remove wheel.
- Pull wheel speed sensor out of wheel bearing housing.
- Check rotor for damage and cleanliness.
Note:
- If rotor is damaged or dirty remove drive axle. If damaged, replace outer constant velocity joint with rotor.
- The outer constant velocity joint is supplied with rotor as a replacement part.
