Definitions

Definitions
These explanations refer only to the Automatic Transmission 01V All Wheel Drive models. These definitions are not necessarily universally valid.

ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid)
Transmission oil for automatic transmission

ATF pump
Supplies ATF for the automatic changing of gears, all lubrication points (except front final drive and transfer gearbox) and torque converter.

ATF level
Correct function and comfort of gear changes requires a conscientious observance of the ATF level and checks.

Automatic transmission 01V
It is characterized by the further development of the Dynamic Shift Program (DSP) and two planetary gear sets as well as a parallel axis Torsen center differential.

Brakes
They switch with the clutches in combination with the individual forward and reverse gears of the planetary gearboxes and provide the various forward gear ratios.
The brakes are supported on the transmission housing as opposed to the clutches.

CAN-bus
A bus is defined path or "highway" for the transmission and distribution of data.
A Controller Area Network (CAN) is a bus system working with two wires, known as "bus" wires. The bus wires transmit data in serial form (one after the other) to the control modules connected into the system.

Torque converter
Transfers the engine torque to the automatic transmission and acts as a drive-away clutch. The torque converter also includes the lock-up clutch.

DSP (Dynamic shift program)
On Board Diagnostic (OBD)
The capability of the control module:
^ To recognize malfunctions
^ To react to malfunctions
^ To store malfunctions as Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) and make them available in the Read Measuring Value Block.

Carrying out On Board Diagnostic OBD)
Connect the scan tool to check the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory. Further information on this can be found the VAG1551 Scan Tool instruction manual.

Carrying out electrical check
By carrying out certain measurements a targeted check of the electronic components can be carried out.

Freewheel/stator
Ensures that the torque is increased in the torque converter when driving off.

Freewheel/transmission
Technically simplifies the gear changes without interrupting the power and ensures a constant gear change quality.

Transmission Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) -G38-
The sensor recognizes the transmission output speed and transmits it to the automatic transmission control module.

Transmission fluid temperature sensor -G93-
Monitors the temperature of the ATF to prevent the transmission from overheating. It is located on the valve body with in the wiring harness for the solenoid valves.

Sensor for transmission RPM -G182-
The sensor records the speed of the planetary carrier of the Ravigneaux planetary gear set and transmits it to the automatic Transmission Control Module (TCM) -J217-.

Kickdown switch -F8-
The kickdown switch is integrated into the accelerator pedal cable. When the accelerator pedal is fully depressed onto its stop the transmission downshifts to a lower gear for increased acceleration.

Clutches
They switch with the brakes in combination with the individual forward and reverse gears of the planetary gearbox and provide the various forward gear ratios.

Shift lock solenoid -N110-
Located in the selector mechanism housing close to the selector lever. Prevents movement (involuntary) of the selector lever from positions "P" and "N" as long as the brake pedal is not depressed.

Solenoid valves -N88- to -N90-
Opens and closes the oil channels to the clutches and brakes upon receiving signals from the transmission control module.

Solenoid valve 4 -N91-
Continuously regulates (as a modulation valve) the amount of ATF required.

Solenoid valve 5 -N92- and solenoid valve 6 -N93-
These modulation valves continuously regulate the hydraulic pressure during gear changes to enables the clutches and brakes to open and close smoothly.

Multi function switch
Electrical switches with various tasks.

Emergency running
If a sensor fails the control module selects replacement signals and introduces replacement functions. If this is not possible the emergency running is introduced.
Emergency running is a "Condition of the control module" when certain malfunctions are recognized it Guarantees the further driving safety, protects the transmission against damage and at the same time impairs the driving characteristics only as much as is necessary.

Oerlikon pinion set
Consists of pinion and ring gear. As an extremely quite final drive bevel gear with offset axis for pinion and ring gear (Hypoid drive).

Parallel Axis Torsen (PAT) center differential
Center differential with self-acting locking function. It prevents the individual axles spinning with snow, ice and mud.

Parking lock
The selector lever controls the parking lock wheel when the vehicle is stationary and prevents the vehicle from rolling (involuntary).

Planetary gearbox
Is a mechanical component of the automatic transmission and is switched via the clutches and brakes without loss of power.

Planetary gear set
Automatic transmission 01V has two planetary gear sets (a Ravigneaux set and a simple planetary gear set) and makes possible the selection of five forward gears and a reverse gear.

Valve body
Located on the bottom of the transmission and is enclosed in the ATF pan. Its valves regulates the pressure and distributes it via the oil channels to actuate the components (clutches and brakes).

Transmission Control Module (TCM)
The electronic control module defines the shift points with the Dynamic Shift Program (DSP). This monitors the function of the transmission via the On Board Diagnostic (OBD). If a component or sensor fails,an emergency running program ensures the vehicle can still be driven.

Rear gear wheels
Two gear wheels in the transfer gearbox, which are driven by the Torsen differential and which drive the rear wheels via the drive shaft and rear final drive.

Front gear wheel
Three gear wheels in the intermediate flange for front final drive, which are driven by the Torsen differential and which drive the front wheels via the pinion in the front differential.

Tiptronic
With an additional selector gate on the right of the normal selector gate, it is now possible to manually shift up a gear by moving the selector lever to plus (+) and manually shift down a gear by moving the selector lever to negative (-).
Automatic transmission 01V is also available without the Tiptronic and therefore has only one selector gate.

Overlapping gear changes
Controlling the respective selector components via the control module ensures that the gear changes between selector components is performed smoothly.

Backlash
Measured at the head of a tooth on the circumference of the pinion when it is is stationary. The permissible backlash must be adhered to.

Selector lever position display
Shows the position of the selector lever and the gear selected with Tiptronic in a display in the instrument cluster.

Selector lever lock
Prevents movement (involuntary) of the selector lever from positions "P" and "N" as long as the brake pedal is not depressed.

Lock-up clutch
Transmits the engine torque mechanically to the transmission.

Ignition key withdrawal lock
It ensures that the ignition key can only be withdrawn when park position is selected and mechanically locks the selector lever in this position.
