Removing and Installing




Transmission, removing and installing
Vehicles with 4-cylinder engine
Special tools, and auxiliary items

Removing
- Obtain radio code.
- Disconnect battery ground (GND) strap.
- Remove engine cover.
- Assemble adapter 10-222 A/3 for front spindle on support bar.





- Position support bar 10-222 A with legs 10-222 A/1 and support engine/transmission in this position.
- Only loosen drive shaft/wheel hub bolt and wheel bolts when vehicle is standing on its wheels.
- Raise vehicle.
- Remove front wheels.
- Remove noise insulation tray.
- Remove noise insulation tray bracket.





- Remove left and right axle shaft noise insulation from wheel housing (arrows).
- Remove right axle shaft protective plate.
- Remove drive shafts.






- Pull connector -1- off wire for Multi-Function Transmission Range (TR) -F125- Switch.
- Turn locking lever -2- and unplug connector for transmission wiring harness.
- Disconnect speedometer connector at transmission.





- Mark position of support bracket for securing selector lever cable to transmission housing (position must be correct when installing). Unbolt support bracket (arrows).
- Remove front exhaust pipe.





- Remove ATF lines from engine/transmission assembly (arrows) and tie-up.
- Plug ATF lines with clean plugs.





- Remove selector lever cable from selector shaft lever (arrow).





- Remove starter.
- Unbolt torque converter from drive plate using special tool V 175.
- Remove lower engine/transmission bolts.





- Set up transmission mount 3282.
Transmission support 3282 is set up with adjusting plate 3282/19 for automatic transmission Of V.
Symbols on adjusting plate indicate mounts required, arrow points forward.





- Move jack VAG 1383 A with transmission mount 3282 under the transmission and support transmission.
- Align adjustment plate parallel with transmission.
- Secure transmission to transmission support 3282 with bolt -A-.





- Remove right bonded rubber mount protective plate -1- on transmission support.
- Remove right transmission support -3- with bonded rubber mount -2-.
- Remove left transmission support with bonded rubber mount.





- Before loosening the sub-frame ensure holes -1- and -2- align on both sides of vehicle using special tool 3393.

Note; If this is not the case, perform steering alignment measurements after tightening sub-frame





- Remove bolts -1- and -2- at rear of subframe on both sides of vehicle.
- Remove bolts -3- at front of subframe on both sides of vehicle.
Bolts -4- (two on each side of vehicle):
- Loosen each bolt 3 full turns.
When the bolts are loosened, the rear of the subframe will drop about 150 mm (5.9 inch)
- Lower rear of engine/transmission assembly slightly with jack VAG 1383 A.
- Remove upper engine/transmission connecting bolts.
- Press transmission off engine and at the same time press torque converter out of drive (flex) plate.





- Press torque converter against ATF pump (arrow).
- Secure torque converter to keep it from falling out.





- Swivel transmission (arrow) and carefully guide out between subframe and underbody.
- Lower transmission.

Installing
Before installing:
- Clean ATF lines. Fluid Line/Hose
- Install torque converter in transmission. Torque Converter
- Ensure dowel sleeves and intermediate plate are correctly positioned on engine.





- Set up transmission mount 3282.
Transmission support 3282 is set up with adjusting plate.
Symbols on adjusting plate indicate mounts required, arrow points forward.
- Place transmission on transmission jack.





- Secure transmission to transmission support 3282 with bolt -A-
- Place transmission jack under vehicle.
- Guide transmission in between lowered subframe and underbody.
At this stage the subframe is lowered about 150 mm (5.9 inch) at the rear.
- Align transmission to engine.
- Install upper engine/transmission bolts.
- Raise rear engine/transmission assembly slightly using jack VAG 1383 A.
- Secure subframe.
- Install left transmission support with bonded rubber mount.





- Install right transmission support -3- with bonded rubber mount -2-.
- Install right bonded rubber mount/protective plate -l- to transmission Support.
- Install lower engine/transmission bolts.





- Remove bolt -A- after transmission is bolted to engine.
- Apply anti-corrosion compound to point of contact between bolt -A- and oil pan.





- Bolt torque converter and drive plate together using special tool V 175.
- Install starter.
- Install drive shafts.
- Install right drive shaft protective plate.
- Install ATF lines to engine/transmission assembly.
- Move selector lever to position "P" and push selector lever cable on selector lever shaft.
- Install bolts to support bracket for selector lever cable and install selector lever cable.





- Plug connector on Multi-Function Transmission Range (TR) Switch -F 125- -1-.
- Install connector for transmission wiring harness and secure with locking lever-2-.
- Reconnect speedometer sender connector.
- Install front exhaust pipe.





- Install left and right axle shaft noise insulation to wheel house.
- Install noise insulation tray bracket.
- Install noise insulation tray.
- Install front wheels.
- Remove support device 10-222 A.
- Install engine cover.
- Reconnect ground (GND) strap to battery.
- Check selector lever cable adjustment.
- With transmission installed, check final drive oil level. Differential
- Check and top up ATF level. Differential

Tightening torques








Transmission to engine

A = 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.)
B = 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.)
C = 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.)

Torque converter to drive plate 85 Nm (63 ft. lbs.)
ATF line to transmission 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.)
Bracket for ATF line 10 Nm (7ft. lbs.)
Drive shaft to transmission 80 Nm (59 ft. lbs.)
Wheel bolts to wheel hub 120 Nm (89 ft. lbs.)
Subframe to body:
M8 bolt: 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.)
- Always replace bolt
M10 bolt: 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.)
- Always replace bolt
M12 bolt: 110 Nm (81 ft. lbs.) + 90°
- Always replace bolt
Axle shaft to wheel hub:
M14 bolt: 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs.) + 180°
- Always replace bolt
M16 bolt: 190 Nm (140 ft. lbs.) + 180°
- Always replace bolt

Transporting the automatic transmission
Special tool 3457 (or equivalent) can be used to transport the automatic transmission and also when setting up transmission support 3282.





- Install special tool 3457 to attachment points on transmission housing and secure.

- Secure transmission to engine/transmission support VW 540 (arrows) and place in support clamp VW 313.
