Recommended Sequence For Adjusting Gear Set
Recommended Sequence For Adjusting Gear SetWhen the ring gear and pinion have to be adjusted, the following sequence of operations is recommended to avoid unnecessary work:
^ Determine total shim thickness "S_total" (S1 + S2) needed for the specified preload of the differential tapered roller bearings.
^ Determine total shim thickness "S_total" (S3 + S4) needed for the specified preload of the tapered roller bearings for the pinion with hollow shaft.
^ Divide total shim thickness " S_total" into S3 and S4 so that the dimension from the center of the ring gear to the end face of the pinion corresponds to the installation dimension "R" determined in production.
^ Divide total shim thickness "S_total" into S1 and S2 to achieve the specified backlash between the ring gear and the pinion.
The purpose of the adjustment is to set the ring gear and pinion to re-create the quietest running position, as determined on the special testing machine used in production.
The maximum care and cleanliness during all removal and installation work and measurement operations are essential for achieving satisfactory results.
