Front Cross-Member: Service and Repair



Subframe, removing and installing





Special tools required

Removing





- Support engine with support device.
- Remove wheels.
- Remove undertray.





- Before loosening the subframe check that holes -1- and -2- align using special tool 3393.

Note: If the holes do not align, an alignment is required after installing the subframe.





- Remove bolt -5-.
- Remove nuts -3- and -4- and connecting link.
- Remove support control arm nut -2- on subframe and remove bolt.
- Loosen bolt -1-.





- Remove bolts -1-.
- Remove bolts -2- and lower subframe.
- Pull out bolts for locating control arm.
- Pull ABS wheel speed sensor wiring out of retainer on brake caliper





- Pull both lower control arms out of subframe.





- Remove nuts -3- and -4-.
- Remove bolts -5-
- Loosen bolts -6- until subframe can be removed.

Installing





- Install subframe and start bolts -5- and -6-.





- Guide both lower control arms into subframe.
- Install bolts into inner holes (arrows)

CAUTION: Before tightening the subframe, attach special tool 3393 to subframe and body.





- Hole -1-, subframe hole -2- and gauging hole -3- must align on both sides.

Note: This attachment replaces any later alignment checking when:
^ The subframe is removed completely and re-installed.
^ Holes -1- and -2- align before repairs are made.





- Start bolts -1- and -2-.
- Start bolts -3- and -4-.
- Remove special tool 3393 and treat inner surfaces of gauging holes for corrosion protection.

Tightening sequence/tightening torque
- Tighten bolts -2- and -5- to 110 Nm (81 ft. lbs.) + 90° further.
- Tighten bolts -6- to 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.).
- Tighten bolts -1- to 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.).
- Tighten nuts -3- and -4- to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
- Tighten bolts for both lower control arms to 90 Nm (66 ft. lbs.) + 90° further.

Note: Press both lower control arms inward when tightening.

- Tighten connecting link to support control arm using new ribbed nuts: 70 Nm (52 ft. lbs.).
- Tighten connecting link to stabilizer bar using new ribbed nuts: 90 Nm (66 ft. lbs.).
- Tighten suspension strut to connecting link, 90 Nm (66 ft. lbs.).
- Install ABS wheel speed sensor wiring into retainer on brake caliper.
- Install wheels.
