Disassembling and Assembling




SHIFT MECHANISM, DISASSEMBLING AND ASSEMBLING
Lubricate all mounts and sliding surfaces with Polyenic grease Part No. G 052 142 A2.





1. Selector lever handle

^ Clips into selector lever handle
^ Installation position: Angled section faces inward

CAUTION: Check with your parts department for latest part number information.

3. Cover
^ With selector scale, selector lever lock indicator and Tiptronic indicator
^ Lift up to remove
^ To remove, disengage retainer from mounting bracket -1- using a screwdriver
^ Removing connector for gearshift positions and Tiptronic
4. Cover moulding
^ Separate piece
5. Trim
^ Insert into symbol panel
6. Symbol panel
^ With printed circuit
^ Clip into cover moulding 4
7. Masking panel
^ To remove, unclip guide from cover moulding 4

^ Do not bend or kink, lightly grease cable eye and ball socket before installing.
^ Selector lever cable must be replaced if rubber sleeves are damaged
^ When installing, make sure that rubber sleeve on transmission side is not twisted

Wiring For Selector Lever Lock, Selector Lever Illumination And Tiptronic, Removing And Installing

Removing
- Remove center console and extension.
- Disconnect connector -1- for selector lever lock solenoid -2- (concealed).
- Unclip cover -3- and lift up.
- Pull out connector -4- for gearshift positions and Tiptronic in direction of arrow.
- Disconnect wiring at connector -5-.

Installing
Installation is performed in the reverse sequence.


Selector Lever Handle, Removing And Installing

Removing
- Shift selector lever into position "2".





- Slide sleeve -1- down as far as it will go.
- Carefully pull button -2- out of selector lever handle -3- over the detent point until dimension "a" is obtained. Lever -4- will then be pulled out of rod -5-.
Dimension "a" = 5 mm (0.19 inch)
- Dimension "a" corresponds to width of connecting eye -6- on spring -7-.
Do not stretch or forcibly remove the spring
- Simultaneously pull handle -3- off selector lever -8-.

Installing
- Shift selector lever into position "2"





- Carefully pull button -2- out of selector lever handle -3- until dimension "a" is obtained.
Dimension "a" = 5 mm (0.19 inch)
- With button -2- pointing toward front of vehicle, install handle -3- on selector lever and push down onto stop.
- Turn handle -3- until button -2- points toward driver's side. Handle will then engage in vertical groove in selector lever-8-.
- Push handle -3- down fully so it engages in circular groove in selector lever -8-.
- Press button -2- into selector lever handle -3-. (Pull lever -4- will then locate in pull rod -5- and will move pull rod up as it moves along the inclined portion -arrow-).
- Pull up sleeve -1- until it engages in selector lever handle -3-.

Securing Spring For Locking Cable, Removing And Installing

Removing





- To remove locking cable, lift spring slightly at top (arrow B).
- Disengage spring (arrow A) from lug (arrow C) and lift out.

Installing
- Insert spring from above (arrow B) and engage under lug (arrow C).
- Align spring so it lies level in groove (arrow A).
- To install locking cable, lift spring slightly at top (arrow B).

Shift Mechanism, Disassembling And Assembling

Disassembling
- Remove shift mechanism.
- Remove rubber stop from cable lever.
- Shift selector lever into Tiptronic position, then remove frame.
- Shift selector lever into position "2n
- Lift locking cable lever, detach from mount and remove from mounting bracket.
- Shift selector lever to position "D"
- Carefully pry spring clip for Tiptronic position out of mounting bracket from the outside.
- Pull out selector lever mount bushings locking clips.
- Push out selector lever mount bushings with a screwdriver.
- Remove selector lever as a complete unit.
- Disassembling selector lever.
- To remove mount for Tiptronic position, disengage retainer lugs on outside of mounting bracket and remove mount from the inside.
- Remove locking pawl pin, with a drift.
- Lift out selector lever lock solenoid together with locking pawl.
- Carefully pry spring clip for gearshift positions out of mounting bracket from the outside.
- Pry out two mounting pins for cable lever and detent.
- Pull cable lever and detent out of mounting bracket with opening of detent pointing upward.
- Disengage detent from cable lever.

Assembling
- Engage detent in cable lever.
- Insert cable lever and detent into mounting bracket from above (opening of detent is inserted first).
- Drive two mounting pins for cable lever and detent into mounting bracket (one pin on each side) as far as they will go.
- Press spring clip with roller for gearshift positions into mount on mounting bracket as far as it will go.
- Insert selector lever lock solenoid in mounting bracket from above together with locking pawl.
- Carefully drive in pin for locking pawl.
- Use a screwdriver to ensure locking pawl is properly engaged when selector lever is in positions "P" and "N."
- Insert selector lever in mounting bracket as a complete unit.
- Engage selector lever in cable lever at top and bottom.
- Slide two selector lever mount bushings into mounting bracket, one from front and one from rear.
- Install locking clips to secure mount bushings in mounting bracket. Angled ends of clips must point in.
- Press spring clip with roller for Tiptronic position into mount on mounting bracket as far as it will go.
- Shift selector lever into position "2"
- Place locking lever in mounting bracket and ensure it engages properly at both mounts.
- Check operation of locking lever. With selector lever in position "P" locking lever should engage detent and make it impossible to change gear.
- Place frame on mounting bracket (ribbed side up) and insert stop buffer in cable lever.
- Install shift mechanism.
