Selector mechanism, adjusting

Note: Before adjusting the selector mechanism check the following:
^ Selector mechanism, including all operating and relay elements, must be in perfect working condition.
^ The selector mechanism must operate smoothly
^ The transmission, clutch and clutch operating mechanisms must be in perfect working condition.
^ The transmission must be in the "Neutral" positron.


- Carefully pry cover off center console.
- Remove shift knob with cover.





- Remove nuts and remove rubber cover for gear lever housing.
- Measure distance between body and selector mechanism.





- Distance -a- must be 37 mm (1.46 inch).
- If distance is not as shown adjust dimension -a- as follows:
- Loosen push rod bolt (arrow).

Note: The push rod/selector mechanism connection must move freely.

- Set to dimension -a- by moving selector mechanism.
- Tighten push rod bolt (arrow).





- Loosen ball housing nuts (arrow -A- and arrow -B-).
- Set ball housing to horizontal position.
- Tighten ball housing nuts.





- Loosen selector rod bolt (arrow).

Note: The selector rod/selector mechanism connection must move freely.

- Align gear lever so that it is positioned slightly toward rear.





^ The distance -a- for both ball stop ends to ball housing must be equal.
- Tighten selector rod bolt.
Tightening torques

Functional check
^ The gear lever must rest in the 3rd/4th gear gate when the transmission is in neutral.
- Operate clutch.
- Select all gears several times. Pay particular attention to operation of reverse gear catch.
^ The gear lever must move from the 5th/reverse gear gate into the 3rd/4th gear gate on its own.
If a gear fails to engage smoothly after repeated selection then continue as follows:

Fine adjustment





- Loosen ball housing nuts (arrow -A- and arrow -B-).
- Press gear lever to right onto transmission stop.
- While pressing gear lever push ball housing to left against selector lever.
- Hold gear lever and ball housing in this position and tighten.
- Install shift knob and cover.

Note: If only 5th gear and reverse gear cannot be engaged, the 5th and reverse gear locking unit must be checked and replaced if necessary.
