Speedometer vehicle speed sensor and drive gear, replacing
Replacing speedometer vehicle speed sensor
(Transmission installed)
Observe general repair instructions. Service and Repair
- Disconnect harness connector from sensor -A-.
- Press down retaining clamp, turn sensor sideways and pull upward and out.
- Always replace seal -B- when installing sensor.
Note: Handle sensor carefully If damaged, the speedometer will not indicate vehicle speed accurately
Speedometer drive gear, replacing
(Transmission installed)
Removing
- Turn steering to left onto full lock stop.
- Remove cover above left-hand drive axle.
- Disconnect axle from drive flange.
- Place oil drip tray under transmission.
- Remove flange shaft.
- Pull out flange shaft oil seal with VW 681.
- Remove speedometer vehicle speed sensor.
Remove speedometer drive gear:
- Press retaining clips in direction of arrows with a screwdriver.
- Alternating between sides, pry drive gear out, .
Installing
When installing note the following:
Installation position:
The drive lug of drive gear -A- faces to seal -B- and locates in the groove of the differential.
The retaining clips (arrows) locate in the circumferential groove in differential.
Always replace seal -B- and circlip -C-.
- Drive flange shaft in with drift VW 295.
- Top up transmission oil.
Tightening torques
Drive axle to flanged shaft M 8: 45 Nm (33 ft. lbs.)
Drive axle to flanged shaft M10: 80 Nm (59 ft. lbs.)
Cover plate above drive axle to transmission: 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.)
