Selector mechanism, servicing

Note: Lubricate all mountings and sliding surfaces with Polyuric grease, Part No. G 052 142 A2.





1. Shift knob
^ Remove together with cover
2. Cover
^ Separating from shift knob Fig. 1
^ Connect to shift knob before installing
3. Circlip
^ Always replace
4. Spacer sleeve
5. Spring
6. Ball stop
^ Insert spring and spacer sleeve in the ball stop and assemble on the gear lever so that the spring and sleeve are on the right when looking toward the front of vehicle.
^ Install circlip (item 18) before installing

8. Bushing
^ Installed position: The rounded end faces the gear lever
9. Gear lever
^ Only fits in one position in the ball housing
10. Spacer tube
11. 10 Nm (7 ft. lbs.)
12. 10 Nm (7 ft. lbs.)
13. Cover
14. 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.)
15. Connecting piece
16. 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.)
17. Connecting piece
18. Circlip
^ Always replace
^ Remove before removing the ball stop
^ Installed position: the rounded side faces toward ball housing (item 20)

^ 10 Nm (7 ft. lbs.)
23. Socket head bolt
^ 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.)

^ Always replace
28. Selector fork

^ Remove catalyst and front heat shield before removing and installing boot

Note:
^ Carefully pull boot over selector rod
^ Place boot on the marks on selector rod and push rod

- Turn cover inside out.
- Carefully pry segment with a screwdriver in direction of arrow while pulling shift knob out.
