Input Gear, Removing And Installing
Drive pinion and differential do not need to be removed.
Measure friction torque at drive pinion nut and note friction value before removing input gear.
If tapered roller bearings are not replaced, set to previously measured friction torque.





1. Socket head fastener
^ 250 Nm (184 ft. lbs.)
^ Engage parking lock to remove and install
^ Removing and installing; see Fig. 4
^ Before installing socket head fastener insert axial needle bearing (item 7)
2. Dished washer
^ Curved side faces socket head fastener
3. Shim
Determining thickness; Adjustments
4. Tapered roller bearing inner race
^ After measuring thickness of shim, fit onto input gear with locking fluid AMV 185 101 A1
5. Tapered roller bearing outer race
- Drive out with drift
- Drive in with 30-205
- Install with locking fluid AMV 185 101 A1
6. Transmission housing
7. Axial needle bearing
^ Install with flat side facing input gear
^ Insert into input gear before installing socket head fastener (item 1)
8. Tapered roller bearing outer race
- Drive out with drift
- Drive in with 30-205 and appropriately long drift
- Insert with locking fluid AMV 185 101 A1
9. Tapered roller bearing inner race
^ Pulling off; see Fig. 1
^ Pressing on; see Fig. 2
- Insert with locking fluid AMV 185101 A1
10. Input gear
^ With impulse wheel for Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) -G68-
^ If signs of damage exist, always replace input gear and output gear together
^ If input gear is replaced, adjust planet carrier. Adjustments
^ Removing; see Fig. 3
11. Cover
^ Driving out; see Fig. 5
^ Driving in; see Fig. 6

- Place press piece 40-105 on input gear.

- Place press tool 40-503 with shoulder in threaded hole of input gear.
- Place press tool with VW 771 through hole of input gear.
- Drive out input Gear carefully.

A - Torque wrench
B - 22 mm AF socket insert
- Engage parking lock to loosen and tighten.
