Convertible Top Canvas: Service and Repair

Convertible Top Padding 09.98 -->, Replacing

Removing
- Remove convertible top cover --> 09.00.
- Remove convertible top cover 10.00 -->.







- Pull padding - 2 - from weather seal - 1 - and remove adhesive residue.







- Remove bolts - 1 - from cover - 2 - and window belt - 3 -. This facilitates pulling in padding.







- Remove mounting bolts - 1 - from corner bow - 2 - and remove tension strap with mounting bracket - 3 - (components are not to be re-used).
- Lay padding - 1 - toward rear.






- Drill off rivets - arrows - (four Qty) and remove rivets.

NOTE: New padding is no longer riveted.







- Remove rivets - 1 - from tension strap - 2 - and padding - 3 -







- Remove clamping strip - 1 - of padding - 2 - out of sealing channel of corner bow - 3 -.

Installing







- Bolt on convertible top mounting frame - 1 - with fitting bracket V.A.G 1887 - 2 - to chassis.

NOTE: Fitting bracket V.A.G 1887 - 2 - should be located at sides of vehicle near edge of convertible top mounting channel in order to reduce risk of damage to paint surface of vehicle.

- Remove bolts - 1 - with retaining bracket - 2 - and metal nuts - 3 -.







- Remove tension strap - 4 -, parts are not to be re-used.







- Drill six holes dia. 3.2 mm for padding tension straps in fabric retaining bracket.

X - = 22 mm
Y - = 10 mm







- Pull clamping strip - 1 - into sealing channel of corner bow - 2 -.

NOTE: Plastic piping must no longer be visible.







- Secure tension strap - 2 - with rivet - 1 -.







- Secure padding with rivet - 1 - to bow - 2 -.







- Secure cushion strap - 2 - with rivet - 1 - to bow.







- Pull convertible top cover - 1 - into convertible top mounting frame - 2 - (to pull in, use lubricant, e.g. silicone lubricant spray D 007 000 A2).







- Align center marking/convertible top cover - 1 - (welding point) with center marking/convertible top mounting frame - 2 - (hole in convertible top mounting frame).







- Secure water deflector - 1 - with rivets - 2 - to convertible top mounting frame - 3 -.
- Bolt convertible top mounting frame to chassis.







- Fold weather seal toward front.
- Clean weather seal - 1 - of felt residue.
- Apply double-sided high tack adhesive tape - 2 - to weather seal - 1 -.







- Hook convertible top with convertible top locks into windshield frame (do not lock convertible top locks).
- Bond lower section of padding - 1 - flush to convertible top end edge on weather seal.
- Apply double-sided high tack adhesive tape - 2 - to padding - 1 -.







- Bond inner section of padding - 1 - flush with padding and convertible leading edge.
- Fold convertible top toward rear and bond upper section of padding - 1 - to lower section of weather seal using double-sided high tack adhesive tape - 2 -.
- Install convertible top cover --> 09.00.







- Install convertible top cover 10.00 -->.
