Differential, Adjusting
Special Tools And Equipment
^ 3155 Ring nut wrench
^ VAG 1332 Torque wrench
^ Torque gauge (commercially available) 0 - 600 Nm (0 - 53 inch lbs.)
Requirements
- Measure and record friction torque before disassembling.
- Tighten bearing body with 3155 to 150 Nm (111 ft. lbs.) and secure.
- Tighten adjusting ring to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.) and mark.
Note:
^ When measuring, do not turn differential, otherwise bearings will settle and measurement will be incorrect.
- Turn adjusting ring by five locking tabs (arrow) and secure to achieve tapered roller bearing preload.
Friction Torque, Checking
A-Torque gauge, commercially available 0 - 600 Nm (0 - 53 inch lbs.)
B -Socket 41 mm
Replace bearing beginning with build date 26 04 8
Friction torque of new bearings must be 60 - 80 Nm (5 - 7 inch lbs.) greater than at drive pinion.
- Before checking torque lubricate bearing with gear oil.
When replacing tapered roller bearing for transmission up to build date.
- Coat bearing with ATF before installation.
^ Friction torque for these bearings is 60 - 80 Nm (5 - 7 inch lbs.) higher than friction value measured before at axle shaft.
Replace bearing beginning with build date 27 04 8
- Install new tapered roller bearings without adding grease.
Friction torque is 35 - 100 Nm (3 - 9 inch lbs.) higher than friction value measured before disassembly, at axle shaft.
New bearing has revised friction value. If bearings are greased specified value can not be attained or torque is too high.
