Section C - Reassembly
^ Remove any paint residue and/or corrosion on thread and splines of axle^ Lightly oil splines and thread on the axle shaft and internal splines and contact surface of 12-point nut in the hub
^ Insert axle into wheel bearing housing and using new 12-point nut (N 905 87602) tighten nut until axle is fully into wheel bearing housing (nut must be fully tightened with vehicle on the ground)
<= Secure control arm to sub frame using new bolt -1- (N 904 84003) and tighten to 70 Nm (52 ft. lbs.) + turn an additional 90°
<= Reinstall bolt -3- to secure stabilizer bar coupler to control arm and tighten to 45 Nm (33 ft lbs)
<= Secure splash shield to sub frame reusing torx screw -A-
<= Vehicles with an automatic transmission, secure pendulum support reusing bolts -arrows- and tighten to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.)
^ Reinstall wheels and tighten lug bolts to 120 Nm (89 ft. lbs.)
^ Lower vehicle on hoist
^ Tighten 12-point axle nut to 300 Nm (221 ft. lbs.) then loosen one 1/2 turn
^ Tighten 12-point nut to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.) + turn an additional 60°
^ Reinstall wheel cover
Note:
If protractor adapter is not available for torque wrench, tighten nut to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs) then:
<= Mark point on nut (arrow A)
<= Mark point on edge of wheel hub (arrow B) 60° from first point (arrow A)
<= Tighten nut until points A and B are aligned
^ Alignment of front end is needed only when a new control arm is installed
^ On TDI vehicles, reinstall sound dampening pan below engine
^ Return removed control arm to Volkswagen of America
^ Properly dispose of all other removed parts
