Rear Crankshaft Main Bearing Seal: Service and Repair





Sealing flange and flywheel/drive plate, assembly overview





Note: Clutch servicing: refer to Clutch M/T [1][2]Clutch

1. 90 Nm plus an additional 1/4 turn (90°)
replace
Threads and shoulder must be free of oil and grease
Use counterhold tool 3415 to loosen and tighten

2. Crankshaft toothed belt sprocket
3. 15 Nm

4. Seal
PTFE seals:
Do not add oil or grease to the oil seal sealing lip.
Coil spring seals:
Lightly oil or grease the oil seal sealing lip.

Replacing, refer to Crankshaft Oil Seal, Belt Pulley End, Replacing

5. Sealing flange
Removing and installing, Remove oil pan
Must be located on dowel sleeves
Install with D 176 404 A2
Removing and installing, refer to Front Sealing Flange

6. Cylinder block
Removing and installing crankshaft, refer to Crankshaft Assembly Overview
Pistons and connecting rods, disassembling and assembling, refer to Piston and Connecting Rod

7. 60 Nm plus an additional 1/4 turn
replace

8. Flywheel/drive plate
To remove and install flywheel counterhold with 3067
Drive Plate, removing and installing, refer to Drive Plate, Removing and Installing

9. Intermediate plate
Must be located on dowel sleeves
Do not damage/bend when assembling

10. Sealing flange with seal
Only replace complete unit
Use protective sleeve supplied when installing
Remove oil pan to remove and install
Before installing, remove oil remains from crankshaft journal with a clean cloth.
Do not add oil or grease to the oil seal sealing lip
Remove protective sleeve first after sealing flange has been slid onto crankshaft journal
PTFE seals:
- Do not add oil or grease to the oil seal sealing lip.
- Coil spring seals:
- Lightly oil or grease the oil seal sealing lip.

Difference between oils seals




Note:
The illustration shows the individual sealing rings for the sealing flange. Always replace the sealing flange with the sealing ring together.
In place of the hose spring sealing ring -1-, a PTFE sealing ring (Teflon) -2-. is being installed as a running change. This has a wider sealing lip.
If a PTFE sealing ring was installed, only this type of sealing rinf may be used as a replacement part.

- Engage intermediate plate at sealing flange and slide onto alightment bushings -arrows-.
