Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) (Function 03)




Output Diagnostic Test Mode (Function 03), Performing

The Output Diagnostic Test Mode activates the following components in the stated sequence:
1. Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Canister Purge Regulator Valve -N80-
2. Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Solenoid Valve -N112-
3. Secondary air injection pump relay -J299-
4. Wastegate bypass regulator valve -N75-
5. Valve -1- for camshaft adjustment -N205-
6. Leak Detection Pump (LDP) tank ventilation system
7. Recirculating valve for turbocharger -N249-

Additionally for engine code AWP:
8. Brake system vacuum pump -V192- (only Automatic Transmission)

Continued for all engines:
9. Cylinder 1 Fuel Injector -N30-
10. Cylinder 3 Fuel Injector -N32-
11. Cylinder 4 Fuel Injector -N33-
12. Cylinder 2 Fuel Injector -N31-

Special tools and equipment
- VAG1551 scan tool or VAG1552 mobile scan tool with VAG1551/3B cable
- VAG1598/31 test box
- VAG1594 adapter set
- VAG1526 hand multimeter or VAG1715 multimeter
- VAG1527B voltage tester
- Wiring diagram

Test conditions







- All fuses must be OK.
- Ignition on, engine not running


NOTE:
- The Output Diagnostic Test Mode can only be carried out if the engine is stationary and ignition switched on.
- The Output Diagnostic Test Mode will be broken off if the engine is started or a rotational impulse is recognized.
- During the Output Diagnostic Test Mode the individual final controls will be activated until advancing to the next final control by pressing the -> button.
- The final controls are checked acoustically or by touching.
- If it is necessary to repeat the Output Diagnostic Test Mode, without first running the engine briefly, switch the ignition off for approx. 2 seconds.
- The electric fuel pump will run during the complete Output Diagnostic Test Mode.
- The Output Diagnostic Test Mode will be aborted after 10 minutes.


Work sequence
- Connect the VAG1551 scan tool (VAG1552). Then switch ignition on and select engine control module with the "Address word" 01.(Connecting scan tool and selecting engine control module.) [1][2][3]Connecting VAG 1551 Scan Tool

- Operate scan tool taking into account the information on the display:
- Press keys 0 and 3 for the function "Output Diagnostic Test Mode".

- Confirm input with Q key.

Activating evaporative emission (EVAP) canister purge regulator valve -N80-:

Indicated on display:

Tank venting valve -N80-



The EVAP canister purge regulator valve 1 must click until the next final control is activated by pressing -> key.

If the solenoid valve does not click:







- Pull connector -1- off valve -2- and connect VAG1527B voltage tester with aux. cables from VAG1594 to disconnected connector.
LED must flash

LED flashes:
- Proceed with Output Diagnostic Test Mode until completed.
- Switch ignition off.
- Replace valve.
- Check DTC Memory, if necessary, repair any DTCs and then Erase DTC Memory, checking and erasing DTC memory.
- Read readiness code. If DTC memory has been erased or engine control module was disconnected from permanent positive, readiness code must be generated again:

LED does not flash:
- Proceed with Output Diagnostic Test Mode until completed.
- Switch ignition off.







- Connect VAG1598/31 test box to control module wiring harness. Engine control module remains disconnected.
- Check wire between test box socket 64+2 pin connector contact 2 for open circuit using wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms
- Additionally check wire for short to battery positive and Ground (GND).

If no wiring malfunction is detected:

- Check wire between 2 pin connector contact 1 and fuel pump (FP) relay -J17- for open circuit using wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms

If no wiring malfunction is detected:
- Replace engine control module.

Activating secondary air injection (AIR) solenoid valve -N112-:

- Press -> key.

Indicated on display:


Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Secondary air injection solenoid valve -N112-



The secondary air inlet valve must run until the next control element is activated by pressing the key.

If the valve does not click:







- Remove retainer -3-.
- Pull connector -1- off solenoid valve -2- and connect VAG1527B voltage tester with adapter cables from VAG1594 to disconnected connector.
LED must flash

LED flashes:
- Proceed with Output Diagnostic Test Mode until completed.
- Switch ignition off.







- Replace secondary air injection solenoid valve -2-:
- Check DTC Memory, if necessary, repair any malfunctions and then Erase DTC Memory, checking and erasing DTC memory.
- Read readiness code. If DTC memory has been erased or engine control module was disconnected from permanent positive, readiness code must be generated again:

LED does not flash:
- Proceed with Output Diagnostic Test Mode until completed.
- Switch ignition off.







- Connect VAG1598/31 test box to control module wiring harness. Engine control module remains disconnected.
- Check wire for open circuit between test box socket 9 and 2-pin connector contact 2 using wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms
- Additionally check wire for short to battery positive and Ground (GND).

If no wiring malfunction is detected:
- Check wire between 2 pin connector contact 1 and fuel pump (FP) relay -J17- for open circuit using wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms

If no wiring fault is detected:
- Replace engine control module.

Activating secondary air injection (AIR) pump relay -J299-:







- Check fuse for secondary air injection (AIR) pump relay -J299- -arrow-.
- Press -> key.

Secondary air injection pump relay -J299-



The secondary air injection (AIR) pump relay -J299- activates the secondary air injection pump motor, and this must run at intervals until the next control element is activated by pressing the -> key.

If the secondary air injection (AIR) pump motor -V101- does not run at intervals:







- Pull 2 pin connector -1- off secondary air injection pump motor -2- and connect VAG1527B voltage tester with aux. cables from VAG1594 to disconnected connector.
LED must flash

LED flashes:
- Proceed with Output Diagnostic Test Mode until completed.
- Switch ignition off.
- Replace secondary air injection (AIR) pump motor -V101-:
- Check DTC Memory, if necessary, repair any malfunctions and then Erase DTC Memory, checking and erasing DTC memory.
- Read readiness code. If DTC memory has been erased or engine control module was disconnected from permanent positive, readiness code must be generated again:

If the LED does not flash but the secondary air injection pump relay clicks:
- Proceed with Output Diagnostic Test Mode until completed.
- Switch ignition off.
- Check wire between secondary air injection (AIR) pump motor -V101- and contact 1 and body Ground (GND) for open circuit.

If no malfunction in wire is detected:







- Pull secondary air pump relay -arrow- off relay plate in control module protective housing.


NOTE:
- If tools are necessary to pull relays or control modules out of the relay plate, first disconnect battery Ground (GND) strap.
- Before disconnecting battery Ground (GND) strap obtain code for radios with anti-theft coding.


- Using wiring diagram check wire between secondary air injection (AIR) pump motor -V101- contact 2 and contact 2 on relay plate for open circuit.

If no malfunction in wire is detected:
- Using wiring diagram check the voltage supply (terminal 30) for secondary air injection (AIR) pump relay -J299-.

If voltage supply is OK:
- Replace secondary air injection (AIR) pump relay -J299-.
- Check DTC Memory, if necessary, repair any malfunctions and then Erase DTC Memory Page, checking and erasing DTC memory.
- Read readiness code. If DTC memory has been erased or engine control module was disconnected from permanent positive, readiness code must be generated again:

If the LED does not flash and the secondary air injection pump relay does not click:
- Proceed with Output Diagnostic Test Mode until completed.
- Switch ignition off.







- Pull secondary air pump relay -arrow- off relay plate in control module protective housing.


NOTE:
- If tools are necessary to pull relays or control modules out of the relay plate, first disconnect battery Ground (GND) strap.
- Before disconnecting battery Ground (GND) strap obtain code for radios with anti-theft coding.


- Connect the VAG1527B voltage tester to contacts 3 and 4 of relay plate using adapter cables from VAG1594.
- Initiate Output Diagnostic Test Mode again and secondary air injection (AIR) pump relay -J299-.
LED must flash.

LED flashes:
- Replace secondary air injection (AIR) pump relay -J299-.
- Check DTC Memory, if necessary, repair any malfunctions and then Erase DTC Memory, checking and erasing DTC memory.
- Read readiness code. If DTC memory has been erased or engine control module was disconnected from permanent positive, readiness code must be generated again:

LED does not flash:
- Connect VAG1527B voltage tester to contact 3 of relay plate and body Ground (GND) using adapter cables from VAG1594.
LED must light up.

LED does not light-up:
- Check wiring for open circuit between relay plate contact 3 and battery (+) using wiring diagram.

LED lights up:
- Proceed with Output Diagnostic Test Mode until completed.
- Switch ignition off.







- Connect VAG1598/31 test box to control module wiring harness. Engine control module remains disconnected.
- Check wire between test box socket 66 and contact 4 on relay plate for open circuit using wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: Max. 1.5 Ohms

If no wiring malfunction is detected:
- Replace engine control module.

Activating Wastegate bypass regulator valve -N75-:

- Press -> key.

Indicated on display:


Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Wastegate bypass regulator valve -N75



Valve must click.

If the valve does not click:







- Pull connector -1- off valve -2- and connect VAG1527B voltage tester with aux. cables from VAG1594 to disconnected connector.
LED must flash

LED flashes:
- Proceed with Output Diagnostic Test Mode until completed.
- Switch ignition off.
- Replace valve.
- Check DTC Memory, if necessary, repair any malfunctions and then Erase DTC Memory, checking and erasing DTC memory.
- Read readiness code. If DTC memory has been erased or engine control module was disconnected from permanent positive, readiness code must be generated again:

LED does not flash:
- Proceed with Output Diagnostic Test Mode until completed.
- Switch ignition off.







- Connect VAG1598/31 test box to control module wiring harness. The engine control module remains disconnected.
- Check wire between test box socket 104+2 pin connector contact 2 for open circuit using wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms
- Additionally check wire for short to battery positive and Ground (GND).

If no malfunction in wire is detected:
- Check wire between 2 pin connector contact 1 and fuel pump (FP) relay -J17- for open circuit using wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms

If no wiring malfunction is detected:
- Replace engine control module.

Activate valve -1- for camshaft adjustment -N205-:

- Press -> key.

Indicated on display:


Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Camshaft adjustment 1



The valve -1- for camshaft adjustment -N205- must click, until the Output Diagnostic Test Mode is completed by pressing -> key.

If valve does not click:







- Pull connector -1- off valve -2- and connect VAG1527B voltage tester with aux. cables from VAG1594 to disconnected connector.
LED must flash

LED flashes:
- Proceed with Output Diagnostic Test Mode until completed.
- Switch ignition off.
- Replace valve -2-.
- Check DTC Memory, if necessary, repair any malfunctions and then Erase DTC Memory, checking and erasing DTC memory.
- Read readiness code. If DTC memory has been erased or engine control module was disconnected from permanent positive, readiness code must be generated again:

LED does not flash:
- Proceed with Output Diagnostic Test Mode until completed.
- Switch ignition off.







- Connect VAG1598/31 test box to control module wiring harness. Engine control module remains disconnected.
- Check wire between test box socket 115 and 2-pin connector contact 2 for open circuit using wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms
- Additionally check wire for short to battery positive and Ground (GND).

If no wiring malfunction is detected:
- Check wire between 2 pin connector contact 1 and fuel pump (FP) relay -J17- for open circuit using wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms

If no wiring malfunction is detected:
- Replace engine control module.

Activating leak detection pump (LDP) -V144-:

- Press -> key.

Indicated on display:


Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) ->
Leak Detection Pump (LDP) Tank vent. system



Leak detection pump must start up in intervals.

If leak detection pump does not start running:







- Disconnect 3-pin connector from Leak Detection Pump (LDP) -V144-.
- Pull connector off solenoid valve -1- and connect VAG1527B voltage tester with auxiliary cables from VAG1594 to disconnected connector contacts 2+3.
LED must flash

LED flashes:
- Proceed with Output Diagnostic Test Mode until completed.
- Switch ignition off.
- Replace Leak Detection Pump (LDP) -V144-.
- Check DTC Memory, if necessary, repair any malfunctions and then Erase DTC Memory, checking and erasing DTC memory.
- Read readiness code. If DTC memory has been erased or engine control module was disconnected from permanent positive, readiness code must be generated again:

LED does not flash:
- Proceed with Output Diagnostic Test Mode until completed.
- Switch ignition off.







- Connect VAG1598/31 test box to control module wiring harness. Engine control module remains disconnected.
- Check wire between test box socket 80+3 pin connector contact 2 for open circuit using wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms
- Check wire between test box socket 25+3 pin connector contact 2 for open circuit using wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms
- Additionally check wire for short to battery positive and Ground (GND).

If no malfunction in wire is detected:
- Check wire between 3 pin connector contact 3 and fuel pump (FP) relay -J17- for open circuit using wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms

If no wiring malfunction is detected:
- Replace engine control module.

Activating recirculating valve for turbocharger -N249-

- Press -> key.

Indicated on display:


Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Recirculating valve for turbocharger -N249-



The valve must click.

If the valve does not click.







- Pull connector -2- off valve -1- and connect VAG1527B voltage tester with aux. cables from VAG1594 to disconnected connector.
LED must flash

LED flashes:
- Proceed with Output Diagnostic Test Mode until completed.
- Switch ignition off.
- Replace valve.
- Check DTC Memory, if necessary, repair any malfunctions and then Erase DTC Memory, checking and erasing DTC memory.
- Read readiness code. If DTC memory has been erased or engine control module was disconnected from permanent positive, readiness code must be generated again:

LED does not flash:
- Proceed with Output Diagnostic Test Mode until completed.
- Switch ignition off.







- Connect VAG1598/31 test box to control module wiring harness. Engine control module remains disconnected.
- Check wire between test box socket 105+2 pin connector contact 2 for open circuit using wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms
- Additionally check wire for short to battery positive and Ground (GND).

If no malfunction in wire is detected:
- Check wire between 2 pin connector contact 1 and fuel pump (FP) relay -J17- for open circuit using wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms

If no wiring malfunction is detected:
- Replace engine control module.

Only engine code AWP with automatic transmission:

Activate brake system vacuum pump -V192-:


- Press -> key.

Indicated on display:


Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Brake vacuum pump activation



The brake booster control module -J542- activates the brake system vacuum pump -V192-, and the pump runs until the next actuator is activated by pressing the -> key.

If the brake system vacuum pump -V192- does not run:
- Check activation of vacuum pump

If vacuum pump runs:
- Press -> key.

Continued for all engines:

Activate injectors -N30- to -N33-:


- Press -> key.

Indicated on display:


Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Injector cylinder 1 -N30-



- Press -> key.

Indicated on display:


Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Injector cylinder 1 -N30-



Cylinder 1 fuel injector -N30- must click five times.


NOTE: The fuel pump must run and the flow noise must be distinctly audible at the fuel pressure regulator. If the fuel pump does not run, check activation.


- Press -> key each time to advance to next injector.

In this way, all injectors can be checked one after the other in firing order.

If one of the injectors is not activated (does not click):
- Checking injectors. Fuel Injectors, Checking
- Press -> key.

- Press keys 0 and 6 for function "End Output" and confirm entry with Q key.
- Switch ignition off.


NOTE: After completion of the Output Diagnostic Test Mode, switch ignition off. If the ignition is not switched off before attempting to start, the engine will not run, as the injectors will not be activated.


- Check DTC Memory, if necessary, repair any malfunctions and then Erase DTC Memory, checking and erasing DTC memory.
- Read readiness code. If DTC memory has been erased or engine control module was disconnected from permanent positive, readiness code must be generated again:
