Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor, Checking

Accelerator pedal position sensor, checking
(Engine Code: AVH, AZG)

Special tools and equipment
^ VAG1526 A Hand multimeter
^ Scan tool VAG1551 or vehicle system tester VAG1552 with cable VAG1551/3B
^ VAG1594 A Adapter Set
^ VAG1598/31 Adapter cable (121 -point)
^ Wiring diagram

Function
Both the Sender for accelerator pedal position -G185- and Throttle Position (TP) sensor -G79are located at the accelerator pedal and communicate the driver's intentions to the Engine Control Module (ECM) fully independently of each other. Both sensors are located in one housing.

Test sequence

^ All fuses must be OK
^ The battery voltage must be at least 11.5 V

Test sequence
Observe safety precautions, Refer to Powertrain Management,Fuel Delivery and Air Induction, Service Precautions, Vehicle damage Warnings
- Connect scan tool VAG1551 or 1552 and select engine control module with the "Address word" 01. When doing this switch on ignition.
Refer to Powertrain Management; VAG1551 scan tool, connecting and selecting engine control module.

Indicated on display
- Press keys 0 and 8 for function "Read Measured Value Block" and confirm entry with Q key.

Indicated on display
- Press keys 0, 6 and 2 for "Display group number 62" and confirm entry with Q key.

Indicated on display: (1 -4 = Display zones)
- Check specified value for Throttle Position (TP) sensor -G79- at idling stop in display zone 3. Specification: 12...97%
- Check specified value for Sender for accelerator pedal position -G185at idling stop in display zone 4. Specification: 4...50%

Note: The Engine Control Module (ECM) calculates the voltage value of the angle sensors in percent relative to 5 volts and displays these percentage values. (5 volts supply voltage represents 100%)

- Depress gas slowly until Wide Open Throttle (WOT), and observe percent indication in display zones 3 and 4:
The percent indication in display zone 3 must rise evenly. The tolerance range of 12...97% will not be used in it's entirety.
The percent indication in display zone 4 must rise evenly. The tolerance range of 4...50% will not be used in it's entirety.

Note: The indicated value in display field 3 must always be approximately twice as large as the value in display field 4.

If the display does not indicate as described:
- Check voltage supply and wiring connections of Sender for accelerator pedal position and Throttle Position sensor, Refer to Powertrain Management, accelerator pedal position sensor checking, Testing and inspection

Checking voltage supply and wiring to control unit
- Remove driver side storage compartment
- Disconnect 6-pin harness connector for TP sensor and Sender for accelerator pedal position.
- Switch ignition on.

- Connect multimeter to the following terminal connector for voltage measurement.
Contact 1 + Ground (GND)
Contact 1 + 5
Contact 2 + Ground (GND)
Contact 2 + 3
Specification: at least 4.5 V
- Switch ignition off.

If the specified values are not obtained:
- Remove inner plenum chamber cover, left.

- Connect test box VAG1598/31 to control unit wiring harness. The Engine Control Module (ECM) is not connected by this action.

- Check wiring between test box and connector for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
Contact 1 + socket 72
Contact 2 + socket 73
Contact 3 + socket 36
Contact 4 + socket 35
Contact 5 + socket 33
Contact 6 + socket 34
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 ohms
- Additionally check wiring for short to battery positive (B+) or Ground (GND).
- Additionally check wires for short to one another.

If no wiring malfunction is detected:
- Replace Throttle position sensor.
In vehicles with automatic transmission the transmission control module must also be adapted.
Refer to Powertrain Management; Performing On Board Diagnostics (OBD); Basic setting. initiating.
