Engine Control Module (ECM), Replacing
Special tools and equipment
- VAG1551 scan tool with VAG1551/3B cable
Removing
- Print out the control module identification and that of previous control module coding as follows:
- Connect the VAG1551 scan tool (VAG1552). Then switch ignition on and select engine control module with the "Address word" 01. Connecting scan tool and selecting Engine Control Module (ECM).
The control module identification and coding are indicated on the display, e.g.:
06A906032BS 2.0 L R4/2V G *3539 ->
Coding 00003 WSC 00000
- Print out the control module identification by pressing the scan tool print button.
- Press the -> button.
- Press buttons 0 and 6 for the function "End output" and confirm entry with the Q button.

- Switch off ignition.
NOTE: If the control module version installed in the vehicle is not displayed, replace control module. For the current engine control module (ECM) part number:

- Remove inner plenum chamber cover, left:
- Press the retaining tab -arrow- to left and pull the control module out.
- Release connector from control module and pull off.
- Remove control module.
Installing
- Install control module connector and lock.
- Place the new control module into the retaining frame.
- Adapt new control module to throttle valve control module.
- On vehicles with cruise control system: Check whether this function has been enabled (activated). If "G" is not evident in control module identification, activate cruise control system. [1][2][3]Connecting VAG 1551 Scan Tool
Vehicles with automatic transmissions:
Learning kick-down point
- Adapt control module for automatic transmission.
Continued for all vehicles
- Check DTC memory, if necessary, repair any malfunctions and then erase DTC memory, checking and erasing DTC memory. Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes
- Perform idle check. Testing and Inspection
- Test drive vehicle.
Observe the valid safety precautions when performing a road test. Technician Safety Information
During the road test the following operating conditions must be fulfilled:
- The coolant temperature must exceed 80 °C.
- When the temperature is reached, the operating conditions

Part throttle
Enrichment
Wide open throttle
Overrun
must be obtained several times.
