VAG1551 Scan Tool




VAG 1551, Connecting And Selecting Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220-

NOTE:
- The newest version of connection wire must always be used or else communication problems can occur between the scan tool and the control module.
- VAG 1552 mobile scan tool can be used instead of VAG 1551 Scan tool, but no print-out can be created.
- All functions of the VAG 1551/1552 can also be performed with the VAS 5051 scan tool. Connecting the VAS 5051.


Test conditions







- All fuses must be OK
- The battery voltage must be at least 11.5 V
- Ground connection between engine and body must be OK
- All electrical accessories, e.g. lights and rear window defroster must be switched off
- If the vehicle is equipped with air conditioning, it must be turned off
- Selector lever must be in position "P" or "N" on vehicles with an automatic transmission.

Work sequence







- Connect scan tools VAG 1551 or 1552 with cable VAG 1551/3B.
After the scan tool has been connected (depending upon desired function):
- Switch ignition on
or
- Start engine, Table "Selectable functions."


NOTE:
- If the display remains blank, check voltage supply for diagnostic connection.
- If the display does not indicate as described in the work sequence

- If due to an input malfunction "Error in communication link" is displayed, pull wire off scan tool, reconnect and repeat work step.


- Operate scan tool taking into account information on display.

- Press button -1- for "Rapid data transfer."
- Press buttons -0- and -1- for address word "Engine electronics" and confirm entry with -Q- button.

Display will indicate the control module identification and the coding, e.g.:


06A906032EM 1.8L 5VT NB AG4 G 3467 ->
Coding 00003 WSC 00000



- 06A 906 032 EM = Part No. of control module (for current control module version, see parts catalog)
- 1.8 l Engine displacement
- 5VT Construction style of engine (5 valves, turbo)
- AG4 = Automatic transmission (4 speed)
MT = Manual transmission
- G = cruise control enabled
- 3467 = Program version number
- Coding xxxxx = coding of control module
- WSC xxxxx = Factory identification from VAG 1551, with which the last coding was performed (if factory coding has not been changed, WSC 00000 will be displayed)


NOTE:
- Replace control module if the control version displayed does not correspond to the vehicle.
- An incorrectly coded Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- leads to:
- Engine running malfunctions (gear change jerking, load change jerking, etc.)
- Increased fuel consumption
- Increased exhaust gas emissions
- DTCs stored in DTC memory which are not actually present
- Functions will not be performed (Oxygen sensor control, activation of the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) system, etc.)
- Reduced transmission life.


If the coding differs from the vehicle version, then:
- Replace Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220-.
- Press -> button.
