FN 3 Caliper


Special tools and equipment





^ VAG 1331 Torque wrench or equivalent
^ Piston resetting tool

Removing

Note: If you reuse brake pads, mark the location and re-install them in the same position to avoid uneven braking





^ Remove protective caps (arrows).





^ Using a screwdriver, pry brake pad retaining spring out of brake caliper housing (arrow) and remove.





^ Remove both guide pins (arrows) from brake caliper.
^ Remove brake pads.

CAUTION!
^ Do not allow the caliper to hang by the brake hose. The unsupported weight can stretch and damage the hose.
^ Do not disconnect the brake hose from the caliper when removing brake pads.

^ Clean brake caliper housing, especially bonding surface for brake pad. Surfaces must be free of adhesive or grease residue.

Installing

WARNING! Brake fluid is poisonous. Never siphon brake fluid by mouth.

CAUTION!
^ Extract some of the brake fluid from the brake fluid reservoir before pushing the pistons back.
^ A full brake fluid reservoir may allow brake fluid to flow out and cause damage when pistons are pushed back.
^ Use the bleeder bottle or plastic bottle which is used only for brake fluid.





Brake pads with specified direction of rotation
1 - Right-hand piston side brake pad
2 - Left-hand piston side brake pad with pad wear sensor
3 - Pad wear sensor connector





^ Press piston back.
^ Insert brake pads.





When the brake pad is installed, the arrow -A- on the brake pad backing plate must point downward.

CAUTION! When installed, it is important that the arrow on the brake pad backing plate A- points downward.

^ Install outer brake pad in brake caliper.
^ Pull protective foil off outer brake pad backing plate.





^ Install housing with both guide pins (arrows) to brake carrier.
^ Install protective caps.
^ Insert retaining spring into brake caliper housing.

CAUTION! After installing new brake pads, depress brake pedal firmly several times with vehicle stationary to seat brake pads to brake disc.
