Condition

Power surge on secondary air pump blows 40 Amp. fuse

Production

Fuse eliminated as of:

New Beetle VIN: 3VWCP21CX1M466883

Jetta VIN: 3VWSD69M18

Golf VIN: Unknown (phased in June of 2001)

Service

Modify harness by removing 40 Amp. fuse as follows:

Note:
After removal of the 40 Amp. fuse, the circuit is still protected by a 50 Amp. fuse located in the fuse holder on the top of the battery. See VESIS wiring diagram of the appropriate model.

WARNING!
Disconnect battery Ground (GND) cable before working on electrical system.

- Obtain radio code and customer settings.

- Remove battery Ground (GND) cable.





- Remove Relay/Fuse holder in engine compartment (see Repair Manual Wiring Group 97 Protective housing for relays in engine compartment, removing and installing).

New Beetle

- Obtain radio code and customer settings.

- Remove battery Ground (GND) cable.





- Remove Relay/Fuse holder in engine compartment (see Repair Manual Wiring, Group 97 - Protective housing for relays in engine compartment, removing and installing).





- Locate, cut and strip wires to 40 Amp. fuse.

- Connect (cut and stripped) wires with splice connector, crimp and seal with heat gun.

- Remove fuse terminals (with removal tool 1978/8) and discard.

- Reinstall relay/fuse holder into box and reinstall cover.

^ Circuit is now protected by 50 Amp. fuse located on top of battery.

WARNING!
Ensure there is no person inside vehicle when connecting battery Ground (GND) cable.

- Connect battery ground (GND) strap.

- Check all Systems for stored DTC's.

- Erase any stored DTC's.

Perform the following as necessary:

- Set Climatronic, power window, and power seal adaptation per Repair Manual and/or Owner's Manual.

- Set engine basic settings (Electronic Throttle Control Adaptation).

- Set transmission basic settings.

- Set readiness code.

- Set clock.

- Set radio anti-theft code and program radio station presets.

- Check operation of secondary air pump using VAS 5051.
